location of the former livery stable unitl 1953 he sold real estate for ja williams farm agency and made many friends through his business contacts in 1949 his wife helen nellie campbell died and a grandchildren beth and tim snyder byrevtedcreen st james presbyterian church freedom is perhaps our most cherished belief the foundation of our country our way of life we do not live under tyranny or dictatorship we are free to worship to voice our opinions to live and raise a family yet the freedom we cherish so highly is in grave danger in our world we want to be free to do our own thing without counting the cost of that freedom on the lives of others freedom to choose ones lifestyle can be creative on the other hand it can result in pure selfish indulgence without regards to ones neighbours anyone who has had their sleep disturbed constantly by neighbours knows that it is they who ha ve had their freedom limited we want to be free to indulge in whatever style of sexual freedom we desire but at what expense we see all around us the breaking up of families and the confusion and anger of children growing up in broken homes they have lost their freedom to grow up in a healthy en vironment we want to be left free to eat or drink whatever we wish but who suffers when that results in addiction again it is our families and friends who suffer as well as we do for years the proposed legislation for gun control has been consistently opposed on the basis of freedom yet the ease with which one can procure a handgun makes life fearful and that is a loss of freedom for society as a whole we become afraid to go out at night afraid to go in some parts of our cities at any time is that freedom probably few would want to go back to a society where every aspect of life was legislated and supervised but if our society is to continue we must seek ways to protect the freedoms essential for life there was a group of people very unfree mired in slavery in a foreign land they had despaired of ever being free again yet god chose these people raised up a leader moses and delivered the hebrew people from egypt so god identified himself on the side of freedom not bondage but unlimited freedom along the way from slavery to the promised land god gave these people a set of rules we now call the 10 commandments today we view those rules as stuffy out of date repressive but they were not given by a hard- nosed god wishing to snuff out the enjoyment of life quite to the contrary these rules were guarantees of freedom do not kiu do not steal make community life possible do not commit adultery honour your father and mother are given that we might enjoy happy family life do not covet or desire means that we do not enslave ourselves to the quest for affluence the rat race or sacrificing our lives for success or power the fundamental point of the com mandments is that in order for human beings to live together in com munity they must limit certain areas of life to protect the whole there would be no freedom for the hebrew people if someone was able to go out and kill someone he didnt like is life any different today i would contend that in the fun damentals of life it is not we still need foundations godgiven guidelines for living together in freedom and happiness we need guidelines to prevent our enslaving ourselves to pills or drugs or booze or our jobs and as i look at our society with so much breaking down marriages families individuals so many people searching for meaning so many afraid of tomorrow i find the 10 commandments just as relevant as ever mens breakfast dr matthew dymond former minister of health in the ontario government will be the speaker at a mens breakfast to be held at st james presbyterian church this saturday
