of toronto was telling everyone its good to be alive sam should know he thought he was facing death early last week when he looked along the muzzle of a sawedoff 22 rifle into the hard cold eyes of an eighteen year old youth and thought this is it sam had picked up a youth and his girl com panion near finch ave on monday night and they had asked him to drive them a few miles north the pale quiet girl sat with a dog in her lap as the taxi drove northwards and sam said he had no reason whatever to be suspicious he did get a little worried however when the youth in the back of the taxi kept telling him that his destination was just a few miles further it crossed sams mind that he might not get paid in full for so long a trip sam knew something was wrong however when he was ordered to stop his cab in an isolated area of whitchurch stouffville he was ordered out of the cab at gun point and told to start walking it was the worst ordeal of my life sam gilbert told the tribune as he sat in newmarket court last week awaiting the brief appearance of the two persons charged with armed robbery and other offences the 67yearold man said that he tried reasoning with his gun toting passenger and promised i wont say a word about this sam said he told the youth do me a favour this ride is on the house he said the answer to his plea was a gun poked into his back and an order to get going the thoughts that went through sam gilberts mind after that werent the pleasantest i kept thinking he was going to shoot a person could have been killed out in that spot and have been there for weeks without being found the next thing he heard however was the screech of tires as his cab was driven away and he was left alone in the dark and cold of the night they looked so legit sam commented to detective sgt william gervais who is in charge of police investigation in the matter he added im always careful about who i pick up and they told me they only wanted to go a few miles the elderly taxi driver completely lost wandered along the dark and unfamiliar road without knowing which direction he was heading when suddenly he saw a house back from the road there were no lights shining from the place at that hour in the morning but to sam it was a place where he could go to get help after knocking on the door it was opened by a man accompanied by a dog and sam said it took some talking to get across the truth of his story but when mr and mrs r bambrickofrr l cedar valley realized the plight of the elderly man he was welcomed given warm drinks and cared for until york regional police arrived they were just wonderful to me they did all they could i dont know what i would have done if i hadnt found them sam gilbert said a tremor in his voice as he relived his ordeal the toronto cabbie also praised york regional police and in particular sgt gervais who he said did everything they could for me police located sams car which had been abandoned on the ice of lake simcoe its transmission shot it cost sam 65 to get the vehicle towed off the ice and it will cost him another 300 or so to get the cab fixed but sam had the last laugh his assailants did not find the 40 or so in cash which he had put away in a hidden pocket in the car he could have been trigger happy i could be dead now sam told the tribune as he was taken upstairs into court by sgt gervais his parting words therell be no teenagers in my cab ever again after midnight and no more out of town rides sam was content to know that a youth and his girl friend had been arrested at 11 am that morning after police discovered they had broken into an abandoned cottage to sleep ill always be careful from now on he said as he left happy to be alive to tell his storv gregory paul bott aged 18 a toronto salesman and colleen dianne thompson aged 21 both of marjorie ave toronto appeared in court last week before provincial judge c waisberg charged with theft while armed possession of a restricted weapon and theft bott who faces other charges in a toronto court has been remanded in custody to march 28th thompson will be released on 1000 bail and will appear again on the same date arena bid accepted uxbridge the new township arena and community hall could be underway within a month in uxbridge provided the region of durham and the ontario municipal board approves uxbridge has finally accepted a tender bid for the complex the con tract was awarded to condign limited of waterloo to design and build the centre which will replace the existing arena due to close this spring it was estimated the firm price to be 850000 which is in keeping with the original figure set in the council budget the arena and hall could be built within 24 weeks upon receiving regional and provincial approval bantam bs uxbridge council had originally rejected plans drawn up by an architect commissioned by the township because of its 920000 price tag councillor sandy ewcn assured however that- despite the lower cost the new
