of stouffvilles greatest hockey players the player described as most everyone knows is perry brown the all star stouffville clipper forward who last week smashed the alltime scoring league record perry did it in overpowering fashion collecting 13 points in last saturdays 217 rout of uxbridge his game points gave him a total of 114 easily passing the old record of 102 set last year perry has two more games this week which could add even more goals to his incredible record in the mould of all great champions perry was very humble when discussing his feat giving ample praise to his line mates and the rest of the clipper team our line mike whelan tim quinn and perry has worked great together they are both super hockey players and the whole team gave me a lot of confidence in the game they gave me a lot of help he commented perry stated that he knew he was close to the record going into the uxbridge game but wasnt positive just how close because of conflicting reports as to just what the old record was the record was on my mind sure perry said but i also wanted to stay on top of the league scoring perrys points came on two goals and 11 assists and the amazing part of it was that perry had only two points at the end of the first period the total represented a career high for perry perry is in his second and final year with the clippers and said be has undergone a lot of changes since his fresh man term last year was the first time i had played hockey for two years and i felt a little rusty a lot of tiires ive received a great deal of help from the coach murray sinclair he has definitely improved my game a lot his point total last year was 61 when his career with the clippers ends perry hopes to move into a senior a club hopefully at orillia or cam bridge from there hes not positive ive thought about the pros now and again but for the moment its just a dream however i still enjoy hockey and i wont give up trying as for the rest of the year perry feels the clippers are finally working together as a team as they approach the playoffs were finally starting to play as we should im sure well be iii the finals and have a good chance to take it all this is my last year and i want to go out a winner i know well give stouff ville a lot to cheer about cathy morln and tim blommestyn both grade 6 students at st marks won first place in the elementary division of the stouffville lions club public speaking competition cathy spoke about the disappearance of dinosaurs and tim about crosscountry skiing their speeches appear on page 6 annegret lamure entirely in support of retaining lehmans pond as part of a natural forest and wildlife area the assessment from the metropolitan toronto and region conservation authority was requested by mayor gordon ratcliff after a hue andcry was raised about councils decision to have the pond bulldozed in council felt the pond could be a hazard when dulverton sub division has been built there was brief discussion of the report by council before the members decided to study the matter further before coming to a decision councillor eldred king recommended an engineering report to determine what effect the dulverton subdivision would have on drainage the rest of council with the exception of councillors bill kamps and bill mcnalley seemed basically in agreement mr kamps termed the report good in theory not in practice and mr mcnalley said the pond would be a dupucatiortof the conservation area if retained the authority further recommended that council consider taking action to acquire additional land west of the pond to be used as park space the report states it rustlers strike head em off at the pass markham the spirit of the old west is not yet entirely dead former markham councillor hi lawrie learned to his chagrin mr lawrie was victimized by rustlers who stole four charolais cows and one bull valued at 2500 the cattle was stolen from his farm in georgina sometime between jan 17 and feb 2 police believe a truck was used to take the animals from the unoccupied premises might be considered worthwhile to look at additional subdivision development between this area and the stouffville dam and reservoir location to provide a continuous open space corridor which will provide an unin terrupted lineal park system for these developments the pond is 06 acres in size and is located on 53 acres of land north of manitoba st on the future site of parkland to be developed in conjunction with the dulverton subdivision east of the pond is a proposed seven acre school site which the board of education feels would be enhanced by the presence of the pond on this point the report concurs with the school board it is stated in the report that the area could serve as an outdoor classroom for the schools proposed in the vicinity at first hand students can study a variety of habitat the associated fauna and as well the natural recovery of a disturbed area the report goes on to suggest that the town consider retaining the park block in its present state this would enhance the total park system through the inclusion of a natural forest and wildlife area in close proximity to a highly urbanized area intensive uses normally associated with municipal parks should be accommodated in the adjacent school play areas providing an overall park area directing the intensive use away from the pond and natural bush and provide some lesser main tenance cost by combining operations with the school authorities the pond appears to be quite healthy and weu used ac cording to the authority there was evidence of the presence of submerged aquatic plants with at least one floating species present said the report and a pathway close to the edge ap peared to be well used by the trampled vegetation the quality of the water appeared to be good with the bottom visible for at least one meter no lives have been lost to the pond in its 20 year history stouffville if efforts now underway are successful there will soon be a town concert and marching band david howard of rr2 stouffville is heading up the drive to form the band and high school music teacher edward hawley has agreed to act as conductor mr howard a trombonist would likely act as marching conductor as he has extensive experience with marching bands he played in the salvation army band for 25 years and spent 10 years with the 7th toronto regiment ar tillery band mr howard explained that the band would be similar in nature to the newmarket citizens band excepts that as well as playing the standard concert songs and veligious numbers the band would have a repertoire of contemporary music it wont be a 1920s straight up and down band said mr howard about a dozen people have been recruited for the band so far and several professionals in the area such as mr hawley have promised to lend their assistance orchestral arrangements can be obtained for many modern groups music such as the beatles explained mr howard he feels by adopting a wide repertoire the band will be able to attract many young musicians who would otherwise have no other musical outlets except for rock and roll bands mr howard hopes the band will attract many former high school students who studied music admission to the band according to mr howard is dependent more on genuine interest than musical expertise i dont want it to be ex clusively for professional or practiced musicians said mr howard what i am looking for is people who want to do it enough to practice mr howard sees the band as a means to keep young people m the community constructively busy and at the same time provide a good service to the town the band would play at civic functions hold concerts in the park participate in parades and perform at the request of local groups and clubs there is a possibility that a local club can be persuaded to sponsor the band and provide uniforms the organizers are hoping for an initial meeting early in march anyone interested in more information call mr howard at 6401702 mr howard is a partner in a toronto electrical business has played in several local churches and has done some gospel bowes vicechairman of the york county board of education said that stouffville councillors misunderstood an invitation to come to the boards budget meeting contrary to mayor rat- cliffs interpretation the board does not want municipal representatives to share the mardi gras this saturday stouffville the stouffville lions club mardi gras should provide an exciting time for everyone various activities will take place in the park this coming saturday starting at noon there will be snowmobile rides for the kids a tugofwar at 2 pm and a dance for teenagers in the evening skaters from the the board of education mr bowes ex plained object of the joint meeting was clarification of the budget we wanted the councillors there to understand how the budget was made up and why said mr bowes not to make decisions for us mr bowes explained that keeping the budget down was difficult because 9156 per cent of the money is allocated to pay fixed expenses over which the board has no control fixed expenses include 7713 per cent for salaries and 143 per cent for light heat reduction of debentures etc this leaves a mere 844 per cent 6 million for miscellaneous items such as building repairs textbooks and maintenance we have 6 million over and above fixed expenses and they expect a cut of 6 million they want us to cut everything out said mr bowes weve had to cut down on textbooks so much that the teachers are complaining because of the lack of funds for maintenance he pointed out that the schools are falling apart the program new faces is aired every sunday at 630 pm on chch channel
