roadhouse now antique shop the tribune thursday january m 18 5 bymeruynmckervey in the markham museum there is a photo of the old roadhouse in cashel taken in 1888 it shows a railed two storey verandah across the entire front of the building and the south gable end the central j v door still on the second floor opened onto this verandah all the win dows had shutters and small panes like those now seen only on the second floor the paired brackets under the eaves were added in the 1870s to introduce an italian- ate feeling which was then in vogue other than these changes noted above the old roadhouse looks today very much as it did when it was first built in the first half of the 19th century the ar chitectural style is called loyalist due to the regular placement of the windows and doors constructed of soft yellow brick the building has little exterior decoration another characteristic of the style the gable roof has both of the original brick chimneys inset over the gable ends the west chimney carries through to the basement where it houses a walkin fireplace now boarded over it has not been established exactly when the old road house was built or by whom one theory is that the roadhouse was built in the 1830s by mr nicholson itand called the llandon i plains hostel however it seems unlikely that there would have been much need for a hostel at that time for there would have been few travellers along the 18th line or the 6th con cession road now kennedy road until the 1840s at that time the elgin mills plank road company was laying planks on the 18th line between yonge street and the scarborough- stouffville road now highway 48 travellers on plank roads paid a toll to travel on these paved high ways the other roads in the area would have been dirt trails cleared of stumps and perhaps paved with logs and called corduroy roads th e various proprietors of the roadhouse included william anderson and samuel mighton in the 1850s john mckinnon in the 1860s william burton in the 1870s and fred quantz by 1878 after 1888 the roadhouse served as a post office and general store the tap room in the south west corner of the building was closed and the stairs to the second floor were moved so that they started in the front hallway storekeepers included mr galbraith from 1898 to 1903 and wesley powell until after the second world war in 1959 the bates purchased the roadhouse from mr powell it is now their residence and where the tap room once was is an antique shop the shop is appropriately called bates roadhouse antiques located dose to the roads it has been serving for over 130 years the future of the roadhouse is threatened by plans to widen kennedy road it is hoped that these plans will be modified to in clude the restoration and outwrites miss gj oshawa times reader she was reacting to my demand for smaller meals in restaurants and referring to the suggested use of doggie bags agreeing that no one should feel embarrassed in arizona we stayed at a comfortable motel in downtown phoenix the dining room was pleasing and the food good we found little bags at our table and quickly learned their purpose- we were not trying j to pinch pennies we were just happy to see that valuable food was not being wasted this is a good idea but menus offering smaller portions for senior appetites would be even better send your questions
