birthday s by betty boadway in spite of the blustery weather tues day evening december 6 family members from as far away as north bay hanover and toronto met in the delightful florida room of the bonfire restaurant lindsay for a very special surprise party to honor the 80th birthday of mrs effie boadway of 44 melbourne st w lindsay and formerly of stouff ville mrs boadway is not only the mother of 4 but also the grandmother of 16 and greatgrand mother to 4 with 2 more expected in the new year mrs boadway arrived at the bonfire in the company of her youngest son ted thinking she was going to surprise him by the presence of her older son harold who with his wife olive had arrived earlier in the day bringing their christmas presents to her they had left promising to crash her planned birthday supper with ted mrs boadway was chuckling at her surprise for ted and completely speechless when she was led into the florida room where the rest of her family was sitting at a long table waiting to greet her her comment later was i was astounded to see them all and realize they were all mine one teenage grandson expressed it aptly gee mom did you realize that if it hadnt been for grandma boadway none of us would have been here thats quite an astoun ding fact and proves that the institution of marriage and family life is really quite alive and well as god intended it to be mrs boadway was presented with a corsage of red silk poinsettias and after her favorite delicious dinner of bar becued chicken the lights were dimmed for the arrival of her birthday cake this was baked at the stouffville bakery in the shape of a bible and carried a quotation from proverbs 3128 they shall rise up and call her blessed yellow and pink roses entwined the cake joyeously her 27 family members sang happy birthday in her honor following dessert two of her grandsons carried in her gift from the family a new gold easy chair which mom promptly sat in to hold court joined by one of her greatgrandsons who crawled into her lap to enjoy the fun mrs boadway was a christmas baby born on december 23 1897 the middle child in the large family of joseph and jennie cunningham of collingwood ont on december 23 1919 she married paul boadway and moved to stouffville where she lived until her husbands death in 1963 during this time she was active in church life teaching in the sunday school and as a member of the womens missionary society of the united missionary church there she also worked for over 25 years as a practical sdss update nurse at brierbush hospital where she was well loved and respected by patients and staff alike four children were born to her 2 daughters pauline of stouffville mr and mrs don ratcliffe and dorthea of hanover mr and mrs harris hallman and two sons the rev harold olive of the united missionary church in north bay ont and the rev ted betty of cameron ont a teacher at fenelon fall secon dary school serving area churches on sundays as needed following her husbands death mrs boadway moved to hanover where she continued her nursing until her retirement about ten years ago mrs boadway moved to lindsay to take up a new vocation as companion to the late charles ferguson in lindsay she has attended cambridge st and fairview baptist churches as well as belonging to the canadian club and a i ladies literary club she has drawn about her a fine group of friends who mean much to her mrs boadways secret for a long life can be found in the fact that she has lived her life tuned in to gods wavelength and his in dwelling presence has given her the wisdom and strength and power to meet the challenges life has offered her so she can sayi as she did i cant believe im 80 i dont feel it christmas commotion byjulysimonds behind the rose to stardom with their original dances talented acting and musical ability on the weekend of dec 3 the prosperous student production raised 1000 that is to be donated to the par ticipation house in markham and to meals on wheels special thanks are given to all those who helped provide such an entertaining evening for the publics generous support and especially to tim brazier and rodger sports activities are also stirring at sdss as the girls volleyball teams are conditioning in preparation for their first game of the season the girls are- hosting both aurora and williams high
