112 the tribune thursday march it 1977 bo wmanville eliminates clippers season finished for may squad by pete sanderson not even the travel- i ling road version of the perry brown show could help the ken may dippers sunday night in bowmanville as the eagle club eliminated the may crew from further playoff action hy a score of 74 it was the efforts of young brown that forced the fifth and deciding game as he scored three times last wednesday right including the tying and winning goals as the clippers nipped the eagles 76 in overtime in that contest the clippers had skated out for the period down 63 but brown made it 64 after only 30 seconds of play mike wightman narrowed the gap even further to set the stage for browns last minute and overtime heroics sunday night the script was the same as the clippers skated out for the third period down 52 terry sarginson and ted pule had given the eagles a first period 20 lead but early in the second frame geoff roy scored to narrow the gap puk gave the eagles breathing room once again but three minutes later at 1103 brown notched a powerplay goal to make the score 32 to this point in the contest the may club had actually- taken the play to the perry brown best by far the mother of two cobourg cougar hockey players waited patiently outside the ken may clipper dressing room two weeks ago after the nippers had humiliated her sons team 112 she had asked for the stick of clipper winger perry brown and upon receiving it asked that the following message be relayed to the diminutive speedster in her many years of watching junior c hockey in cobourg she had never seen as good or exciting a player as young brown despite the cougar loss tne allout efforts of perry brown had been much ap- preciated by the cobourg fans because without him the scries would not have been nearly as exciting as it had been she concluded with best wishes to perry for continued success in the semifinal round perry brown finished one point behind clipper scoring ace kevin barrick in the regular season team scoring statistics he also played seven fewer games than ceritreman barrick he led the clipper playoff statistics by a country mile and if there was a means of measuring desire no one on the clipper team would even come close when the league announces its final all star selections and its most valuable player it would be a grave over sight if the name perry brown wasnt included somewhere in the list without doubt perry brown was the most valuable ken may real estate clipper in this their finest season eagles but the one goal bowmanville lead became three as the period ended sarginson and roy gibles finding the mark as in the previous two contests the clippers scored early in the third period defenceman damon bennett ripped a shot past eagle goalie len chappel who turned in another sparkling per formance fifty seconds later however the eagles lead once again became three as don spicher beat clipper goalie rick marshman who was subsequently replaced by brad steel clipper captain ted assinck gave the may club a glimmer of hope as he renewed the comeback bid with a goal midway through the period clipper coach murray sinclair pulled goalie steel in favour of a sixth attacker but the move backfired as eagle terry johnston iced the semi final series for the bowmanville club who now meet lindsay in a best of seven final perry brown was once again oustanding for the clippers defen ceman craig waite turned in bis usual strong game as did centreman andy leitcb and midgets steve schell and brad steel played ex ceptionally well a strong contingent of stouffyille fans followed the team to bowmanville and were most vocal in their support the ken may sponsored team had a fine year this only their second in the central ontario juniorc league murray sinclair did a truly superb job of coaching the team and it success this season is chiefly because of his fine efforts many league observers feel that coach sinclair is perhaps the best coach in the league and the teams fine showing certainly sup ports the feeling theres little doubt that the teams best player this season was perry brown after a slow start chiefly through his own doing brown led the team with his aggressive gutsy play his playoff achievements were truly outstanding and his ex citing brand of hockey was enjoyed and com mented on by opposition fans in every rival arena following dose on the heels of brown was defenceman craig waite a toward at the start of the season waite became a rearguard with the exit of chris clarridge he played like a veteran and most adequately filled the gap on defence his heady rushes and smart playraaking made him the best of the clippers uueline corps finally honorable mentions should go to defencemen paul par sons and damon bennett forwards andy leitch and bill meakes and captain ted assinck all of whom through their desire and inspired play made this season of ken may clipper junior c hockey a most exciting and enjoyable one for everyone as we look back upon the 197677 season we can only be encouraged by the thought of perhaps an even better season next year and certainly thankful for the fine job that ken may and murray sinclair and their clipper hockey club did this year the stouffville clippers swarm over the bowmanville eliminated the stouffville squad from the semifinal eagles goalie forcing
