children clarion and elaine v i john montgomery e very continued from page i cbut that- it is a subject better avoided according to laurie the rigid screening of students pretty well assures that noone who is racially prejudiced would be admitted if we were all prejudiced it just- wouldnt work she said ratherthan there being racial tensions she explained the situation is just the opposite everybody scares its on the basis of their academicability athletic aptitude and general versatility laurie has found the change from attending dss very dramatic classes run from 8 am until 230 in the afternoon but most work is done out of class its a selflearning process she explained i have to work in high diffeteiit from local school tiavetaken four or five yearsof chemistry to her one v i she feels too much time is wasted in our high schools and everything is spoonfed to the students there seems to be a lack of purpose and interest among many canadians in high school she says the students have- to motivate themselves and thereis noone there telling them what a person is like instructors at the college are more accessible and are involved in the students social life from her experience at pearson she has concluded that something is drastically wrong with the education system in ontario as well as the heavy academic schedule students are expected to be involved in at least two school you just sort of ostudyorgo to classes nonacademic activities such agreat atmosphere breathed through it high the students -dont- have- its going to be hard when school ih a lot of cases to attend dassescbut she you getoutintbthereal waspretty boring sayseyerybqdydoes worlds she told the laurie is taking nobody isthere for seven siibjects plus other- afreerideifyougetyourjj fc tribune she said the at mosphere is so good there that the students all between the ages of fif teen and a half and 17 werediscussing changing their own attitudes to conform with the general public but she said their conclusion was lets activities and she describes the course as so much heavier than high school they really do a lot more she says the european students she studies with are much more advanced in many areas than their change the world not canadian counterparts change pearson they almost all speak students are chosen english fluently and they work done you reallyfeeiii good tj sj she describes the classes as smaller and more intense if you miss a period it makes a big difference- the college she feels is less cliquey than high school rml she said at the local laurie houston school the students are much more insecure and you dont really see one of these is to take pari- in a social service and laurie is on the ski patrol she has taken up mountain climbing and takes modern dance pottery weaving and choir the college has a non- study week when students are to get involved in some activity divorced for the school and from studying laurie hopes to go on a skiing trip to whistler mountain in washington state about coeducational living laurie says i wouldnt have it any other way thats theway life is they are all very responsible mature people so it works out beautifully the only real com plaint she has about the college is the cafeteria style dining and the quality of the food she said she cant get used to eating at a scheduled time- the food is not too good either until she returns to british columbia in january she- will be spending her time with her family and friends according to her mother sybil inquiries about laurie have been coming from friends of the family all over the place one from as far away as halifax ns because of her hectic schedule laurie was for the most part- too busy to be homesick except for about the lastmonlh i jjust went through hell she
