the tribune thursday november 25 lt s tfftrt- t-c- a irv i t markham fire department were called out one evening last week to dickson hill when a childrens club house on 19th ave caught fire the building estimated to be worth 800 was burned right to the ground firemen stayed on the scene as there was some fear the fire would spread into the wood beside which the building was located more letters disgusted parent letter is replied to dear sir we appreciated your letter signed disgusted parent and as a result have discussed at length the volleyball situation with respect to spectator and staff support we realize better than 4 anyone that student support at athletic events is extremely important on the other hand academic performance is equally if not more important team members earn time off school for sports simply by their efforts in practices to determine who earns the right to spectate is considerably more difficult if not impossible and is the sole decision of the schools administration right or wrong it is an ad ministrative directive and must be followed we feel however that allowances should be made for gbssa championship events but when only five spectators followed the volleyball teams to the york county cham- pionships on a saturday and 15 times that number showed interest in the gbssa cham pionships which were- held on a thursday we begin to wonder whether the attraction is the volleyball or the day off school no doubt some of both are present it is difficult to develop interest in a sport about which you have little previous knowledge and both male physical educators presently at sdss have expertise in other fields we spread out time and efforts over feels an injustice v was done dear sir in regard to meeting cancelled in the nov 18 edition of the tribune i feel injustice has been done to candidate gerry fisher in ward 3 of pickering election where the statement is made but the two men with drew making the woman candidate the only one willing to talk to ratepayers fisher said he was new to the game and didnt really have a platform also the statement that the meeting was to be held in the neigh bourhood centre for merly known as the greenwood arena this is a mistake as i know of no change in that name i want to assure you that gerry fisher is well known and respected in ward 3 and knows the problems facing the people and will make a good councillor in regard to having no platform his concern for the people of ward 3 is genuine also his willingness to work cooperatively with others his fellow coun cillors is a real platform gerry fisher will be meeting with the people to discuss their problems during the campaign william a brown rri locust hill editors note the i original story was an excerpt of a press release from ward 3 candidate xorab geraghty it was an oversight on oar part not to have checked the story with he other candidates and an article i presenting their views appears this week volleyball cross country flag football and soccer and feel we did an ex cellent job in all sports other teachers in the school offered support both for supervision and transportation there was no begging and no question of legality we feel the teacher- oriented remarks were unwarranted because thfey were unjustified we do however agree to a certain extent that students should be allowed to spectate at special events provided they show due respon sibility we hope that these remarks will clarify our position and dispel any previous misconceptions we invite any disgusted parent to discuss problems such as these with us either personally or over the telephone at anytime sincerely david connell mens phe dept head peter sanderson volleyball coach let city have pen centre give us transport ministry dear sir people or peniten tiaries the government claims it wants to build a regional reception centre in uxbridge township because it is close to a major city from where most inmates would come toronto etc it would be easy for families to visit and more convenient and less ex pensive for staff to reach the institution have you ever tried to get to rural uxbridge by public transport do all families of inmates have cars do all government employees drive to work south west uxbridge is 40 miles from central toronto the government claims it prefers to build in a rural area because sewage water policing and fire protection would be more readily available is this what is known as double think the government claims it would bring employment to the area but admits it would give first choice to all em ployees now working in other institutions they also admit that should the institution be built near goodwood most em ployees would live in stouffville shop in stouffville and pay their taxes in stouffville uxbridge tonwhsip would receive annually in lieu of taxes a grant of from 80000 to siooooo 50 percent of which would go to the region to us the region is oshawa whitby ajax and bay ridges the government assures us escapes would be unlikely and i disagree but admits that should it happen and property is stolen or destroyed the owner would be reimbursed only after an investigation during which legal help would likely be required ask any airport expropriated landowner about a citizens chance of winning against the federal government our questions are reasonable our doubts are great our dealings with the federal govern ment during the past five years have been soul destroying build the centre in downtown toronto a high rise with builtin security with all inmates above the 10th floor- no barred windows necessary a clear view of the life the inmates would be missing lots of sunshine and fresh air a secure roof garden exercise area a lock on elevators and one guard on the fire escape doors simple sensible humane close to families transport and all facilities give uxbridge in stead one of the federal government departments they are now dispersing throughout canada my choice would be the ministry of transport as a neighbour i would promise to do unto them as they have been doing unto us for five years sincerely margaret e godfrey rr1 goodwood g5jgfiswkra kinsmen club
