said last week there will be another meeting with the ministry of the en vironment regarding the york sanitation dump within the next few weeks they have to come in with a plan for com pensation for damaged water supplies ex plained the mayor the mayor said he hopes that council in their dealings with the ministry will take a second chairman will quit board committee aurora a change in meeting schedules and a heavy workload has forced the resignation of one york region school board committee chairman and could force a second to leave his post aurora trustee norm weller stepped down last week as chairman of the boards planning and building committee after failing to attend a session for two and a half months a member of the boards contract team he has been unable to attend a planning and building session since we started negotiations mr weller said thursday now newmarket trustee craig cribar has said he will find it ex tremely difficult to continue as chairman of the staff relations committee last week the board approved a change in its chaos at meeting of region council york region amid general chaos and confusion york regional council recently passed rescinded and deferred a motion in the same meeting on its first ap pearance the motion to approve an engineering committee report recommending that the region assume control of garbage dumps was passed a few- minutes later richmond hill mayor dave schiller questioned this vote markham councillor bob adams criticized chairman garfield wright for the way in which the vote was handled adams claimed the vote was rushed through before aproper discussion could take place east gwillimbury mayor gladys rolling agreed that this happens often mr schiller in troduced a motion to rescind the earlier voteal though councillors could not decide if anyone even voted earlier in debating the merits of the report vaughan mayor garnet williams strongly op posed the idea that the region should get in volved with solid waste disposal he pointed out that acquiring landfill sites would cost millions of dollars newmarket mayor bob forhan felt that trie region should ultimately get into garbage disposal georgina mayor george burrows felt such a move should be made only at the request of a local municipality mr wright sought to defend the procedures used pointing out that any member could have aiimtem reconsidered at the next meeting ultimately council voted to rescind the earlier vote if any but decided not to take any action either way on the orginal report meeting schedule that will commit trustees to monday night meetings four weeks a month effective in sep tember board meetings will continue to be held on the second and fourth mondays of the month but committee sessions currently held later in the week will be held on the first and third mondays mr cribar said he has other commitments and wont be able to at- tend any meetings scheduled for the first monday of the month in a letter to board chair man doug allen mr cribar said he will miss 50 per cent of the com mittee- meetings and asked mr allen if he should continue to chair the committee the original motion put before the board last week called- for weekly sessions mr weller said 50 to 60 per cent of the work now handled by standing committees would be relieved through weekly meetings weekly sessions would also speed up board activity since there would only be week between decisions he contended firm stand that the dump be closed and capped mr ratcliff was of the opinion the town should not become in volved in the setting up of a compensation fund as a town we dont want to get involved with the setting up of a fund he said present legislation does not allow the town to be involved anyway question have there been any more com plaints of rats in stouff ville we have had only one call from a homeowner we cannot bait on private property anyway we can do so along the street but homeowners will have to look after their own property question what has been the response to the suggestionthe old post office be leased and used by community groups there has been quite a bit of interest in using the old post office building we have heard from quite a few people and we would still be interested in hearing from anybody else who has any ideas there are federal- grants new horizons available if the senior citizens wish to organize themselves into a group i intend to speak with mp sinclair stevens pc yorksimcoe on the availability of funding there has also been some talk about using it for teenage groups i think the government would like us to make a decision soon on whether we will rent it for a 10year period rental will be set at a nominal figure question has anything been done toward getting a bypass of stouffville some traffic counts have been conducted but the whole thing has been jheld in abeyance 1 account of the current austerity program pressure should be placed on the government to provide a
