c the tribune thursday april 29 1 local artist has major show at toronto gallery by john montgomery claremont the work of local artist sally wildman is featured this week in a one person show at roberts gallery 641 yonge sl toronto this is the fourth major showing of ms wildmans work and the third at that gallery the claremont ar- tists work will be the major display there until may 1 the 26 paintings and drawings being displayed represent about one years work ms wildman strives for what she calls a magical quality in her work she works ex clusively with old objects and uses unusual jux- tapositioning to obtain this effect there is usually nothing concrete in the background of her pic- tures and she uses heavy brush strokes to produce a shadowy or foggy et feet this impression is enhanced by making the major figures appear somewhat faint or faded for her large works she uses paper sealed with a clear acrylic and to get the soft coloring she prefers she uses inks the inks have a very light color and have to be built up in successive layers for her smaller works she uses colored pencils or combinations of pencil and ink she says she likes things sort of melting into each other im not interested in painting things as they are she told the tribune i like dream like things and magical things some people say i paint old things and its nostalgic but thats not what mypaintings are to me she refuses to in terpret her own pain tings saying it is the viewers function to do that but she did say she doesnt set out to make social statements only one of her paintings she says set out deliberately to make a social comment and that was a picture she did to protest the pickering airport her subjects are taken from old photographs newspaper pictures and from her own pictures she takes at auctions and other rural events she says that sometimes when she starts a painting she has no preconceived idea of what she wants to do with it but just lets it progress naturally other times she starts out with a fixed idea but she says the finished work rarely turns out the way she had pictured it after graduating from the ontario college of art ms wildman spent a year painting in lon don england on a travelling scholarship before she moved to the claremont area she lived for several years at lemonville many of her subjects are from this area and she once painted a picture of auctioneer walter atkinson according to ms wildman the only critical comment she received from mr atkinson was that he mentioned he wished she hadnt painted a picture of him wearing his old hat several of her paintings were sold during the gallerys preview of her works and one of the purchasers of a larger work was markham lawyer paul mingay the price on her works now being shown varies from 350 to 3500 she admits some of the larger works can take a yearqrtwoto sell brookun communtty centre coiieti rd church st wrd 7 30pm maxkham grace church lporbar ave mon 7 30 p
