a textbook approval procedure- the tribune thursday- february 5 197 5 york cty a tighten of procedures tar acceptance of text- f board iuwarits open i york cty york region public school trustees have joined the fight to keep black creek pioneer village alive approval of a motion last week to send a letter to provincial culture and recreation minister robert welch asking him to keep black creek fully operational in the coming year raised the ire of some trustees what business is it of ours asked markham trustee donald sm its clearly not a matter of concern for our collective assembly he also questioned the effect a letter from the board would have on the fate of pioneer village located just outside york regional boundaries do you think its going to make the slightest bit of dif ference he asked east gwillimbury trustee joy horton and markham representative chris mcmonagle cited the financial implications the move would hold for the board every penny we seek from welch hes going to steal from education minister tom wells mrs horton warned there isnt enough money in the pot any more added x mcmonagle v robert houghton a richmond hill trustee argued the concept of education has changed books gained approval of york region public school board trustees here last week the move is specifically aimed at books that make undue use of obscenities or blasphemies- contain explicit sexual or sadistic- passages advocate or condone immoral conduct or grossly offend religious ethnic or racial groups in an interview following the decision markham trustee donald sim said books that have currently drawn parent and student objection- include on the beach assigned in grade 8 classes and rosemarys baby a- clockwork orange and the ap prenticeship of duddy kravitz in grade 12 under the policy the principal at the originating school will be responsible for assuring a requested textbook meets board criteria parents or pupils objecting to a textbook assigned asrequired study will be permitted to use an alternate book according to the revised procedure it puts the responsibility v for the judgment alf- in the school education director sam chapman told trustees mr sim stressed the move did not represent censorship on the part of the board what were talking about in this motion is not censorship but 7 com pulsion he explained mr sim noted students are required to discuss and read certain books in the classroom it is those books and only those books the motion speaks to he said r agreeing with mr chapman that the policy now places the judgment all in the school mr sim said the change makes principals and teachers aware they may one day have to justify a requested textbook newmarket trustee craig cribar questioned the wording of the new policy the word undue creates a great deal of difficulty he said because no one can define what undue means in bringing the recommendation to trustees the boards program committee was not attempting to create a code mr sim replied we realize that all these phrases are subject to the same criticism he noted king township trustee margaret coburn called for the policy to include a procedure through which teachers could discuss a book with parents i think we should put down in this policy what we see the children getting out of the book she said her suggestion was not acted upon by the board from the edge of the ledge dump crisis worries ned bynervisned help i see the edge of futility again the outlook can change only if our finest minds unite with our great community spirit to fight for our rights where are all those victorious voices raised against floridation a few years ago the battle now is against hundreds of chemical additives to our drinking water nor are they carefully monitored miniscule amounts they are seeping in sidiously down into the water courses and soils beneath that expanding garbage dump located too close to our precious reservoir other towns like port hope fought successfully against becoming metros garbage dump but really folks our cause is a highly moral one let them have their dump somewhere else on our perimeter if they will but please spare our lifeline our water the indians of grassy narrows reserve were told after eight years of commercial mercury pollution of their drinking water and resulting minimata disease dont eat the fish i expect at this stage we could share a similar fate eight years hence with our governmental solution to the problem being dont drink the water it isnt just the health hazards or the inconvenience involved when we will ultimately be forced to go shopping for water but our only option will be floridated lake ontario water that by then will no doubt be inferior to the purity we enjoy today no franchise on the fluoride question either for you folks who disapprove it is my impression we are considered to be little more than a doormat located to metros northeast on some big city of ficials map somewhere between a major industrial waste disposal site and a huge airport if we meekly accept the fate they would hand us then we deserve our destiny but if we truly believe the future to be in gods hands we must also remember he helps those who help themselves tribune book review remains am ry c by wayne moore uthe wheel of things a biography of lm montgomery by mollie gillen fitzhenry and whiteside 995 v- twenty miles north of stouffville lies the hamlet of leaskdale and it was there at the age of 36 that lucy maude montgomery began her married life as die wife of rev ewan macdonald it was there over 1000 miles from her pne island that 11 of her 22 novels were written and it was there that a largest portion of the 2 million words that comprise herdiaiy was written v i drove to leaskdale last week and discovered something of the land scape and environment that must have influenced maude in those years she is still very much remembered by many of the townspeople but little of the woman that begins toshow through in this biography and indeed in the diaries that formed a cbc special in the fall can be found in the memories of leaskdale there is a maude mac- donald who served as mother ministers wife and friend- but lm montgomery the author of anne is as difficult to find there as in cavendish pei or prince albert sask the people i talked to spoke with pride and affection of their memories and they seemed more real with each telling but if i understand correctly maude is elsewhere mollie gillens task of unmasking her subject was enormous for this oldfashioned individual as portayed i in earlier articles and memories is much at variance with the woman who penned the letters and diaries perhaps one can see the simplicity and purity of her character as a relief from the com plexity of her own dilemmas i have long been puzzled by her failure to write what she described as her serious books but with the knowledge we now have especially the letters discovered by ms gillen and the diaries perhaps we will find that lm montgomery could not in print free the woman she knew herself to be or disclose the realities of life as she knew them the loss is ours as well as hers mollie gillens book should help keep alive biographical interest in the woman behind the mask while countless thousands discover anne and her maude this book available from roasts iize rump roasts bonein 1 45 znd big week
