the tribune thursday december 18 ims energy and enthusiasm variety night success by don bernard if the variety night at stouffville dist secondary school could be summed up succinctly in one phrase youthful verve would describe the show written directed and staged by the students it was as always a mixed bag a combination of the humorous and the serious the most en- joyable feature of the evening is usually the music sdss abounds in talented musicians arid that was certainly evident in the 1975 production the beautiful ren- ditions of snow bird and the way we were by becky herbert formed part of that musical package tim brazier sang a beatles favorite yesterday while dale grose gave a thoughtful performance- of the homecoming on piano in the folk idiom wanda kamocki played the guitar and sang the jewish folksong toombalilaka while trudy norton provided a classical interlude with moonlight sonata on piano christeld gloth sang her own hauntingly beautiful song bit- wooden the evening was the finale a tribute to rock star elton john featuring leigh farley playing the piano as the star himself as always the skits were of uneven quality some were very well- done while others failed to have much impact perhaps the most appreciated one was dance number yes we have no bananas with dancers dressed in bright costumes to create a feeling of the stouffville sales barn the dancing was good and the humor resulted from the correctness of the satire the surgery with roger brndjar as a novice dentist pulling out a tooth of a priest played by karl tranmer was also a hit mostly for its slapstick situation and the finale when the dentist drags the helpless priest across the stage pulling out a bad tooth only to find that he ex- traded the crown only- the television jumble requiring some precise timing was also welldone it provided a glimpse of what might happen if the technical people mixed up various programs it proved to be very humorous some of the skits went on too long such as the audition near the end one interesting skit too late for happiness proved to be a serious attempt to say something poor sound system or accoustics or both however spoiled its impact poor sound affects proved to be a serious problem for those people sitting further back than the first 20 rows or so co- hosts maryanne hulshof and russell davidson provided lively leader ship
