abandoned school turned into home the tribune thursday oct jo 1975 9 u goodwood most people know mr and mrs graham hudson from their florist shop however for the past two and a half years the couple has worked a miracle of sorts in con verting a school into a home the school in question is the old two- story goodwood ss no 7 on the 3rd cone the hudsons purchased the building in march of 1973 and proceeded to redo it from top to bottom they related how most of their friends thought they were somewhat out of their minds to tackle such a project s mr hudson told the 7 tribune of a sad state the building was in when they purchased it the inside was dirty and most of the windows had been broken and were boarded up the electrical system was almost non existent and there was no water supply on the property- the furnace was sound however and remains in the renovated building mr hudson said that the building itself is sound the walls are three biks thick and the basement wall is made of stone and mortar the school is unique in another way it is one of the fesfiwostorey two- room schools in the area along with contractor bob bruce they designed the renovations them selves- it took just over a year to complete the transformation the hudsons moved in july of 1974 the transformation was remarkable instead of two 30x30 foot classrooms a home the upstairs room was divided into four bedrooms and two washrooms downstairs the ceilings had been lowered is inches and bc fir beams installed in the living room the bedrooms are lighted with some of the same fixtures found in the original school the staircase was a major job inad of a long single set of stairs a landing was built the original stairs banister and all were used a total of 14 tons of drywal was used all the blackboards were retrieved they are made of real slate and cut into pieces make an in teresting flooring for the entrance way two other major changes were made a large double door was cut in the front of the building the school entrance had been at the side and a large fullwidth porch was added outside the school had two water fountains and those have been preserved to be installed later the school retains some interesting relics of mr and mrs graham hudson stand proudly hi front of their house which was converted from the old goodwood school one major addition was a porch the width of the building and large double front doors don bernard 4 two months for trafficker newmarket a 17yearold gormley youth was sentenced to a 60 day jail term following a conviction on traf ficking charges in newmarket court at the rear of the building another fire escape of more recent design remains and is used as a secondfloor entrance air hudson said that an attempt was made to retain the character of the building one of the prized possessions is the original clock of the school dating from 1893 an inscription reads this clock was purchased with part of the proceeds of a concert gotten up by the teacher and pupils of goodwood public school and given on the evening of dec 14 1893 three of the outside walls had been sand blasted by the previous owner but the west wall remains the bricks are covered with names etched in such well- known names as wagg feasby morgason and taylor can easily be read the hudsons have made a hobby of search ing out the schools history but so far have not had a great deal of success the school was built in 1893 after a frame one burned down that school dated from 1870 it was closed after a new school was opened in 1959 then was reopened for special education classes it was closed as a school in 1971 the hudsons would love to find out more about the schools history anyone with information may contact them at the flower shop on main st stouffville 20 to 40 on your
