sme14 the gates have closed on another successful year at the brougham museum open occasionally for a special tourof school children or for volunteer staff as they button the proud lady up for the winter portable machinery now is tucked away in bams steam boilers drained and dried out cabins and buildings sealed up against the marauding squirrels she waits now for a cloak of while that emphasizes her lonely vigil for another era town of pickering museum a misnomer- as the public thinks of one stuffy local museum building little do they- realize the existence of 15 buildings on our 4 acre site a pageant showing the evolution of pioneer life from the 1820s to the early 1900s the j three restored homes show dramatically the evolution of pioneer homes from rough log shelters from the weather built from natural locally occurring materials to fine comfortable homes with specialized and distinct rooms furnished with manufactured articles and store- boughten goods the evolution of power for working the land is illustrated with our collection of farm imple- ments hand tools through steam then kerosene engines then early gas engines successful summer programmes included an exciting summer project for local students under the ministry of education whereby cataloguing of building contents was largely completed and histories recorded of indivi dual building a soundandslide show was produced that will be available to local schools for teaching pur- poses museum this whole project was under student supervision and with the help of the resource centre of the local board of education they turned out a fine and valuable pro duct local residents appreciated the chaircaning and crewelwork courses offered on the museum grounds this summer another new feature was the visit of the mclaughlin classic automobile club one sunny summer afternoon the museum board while not exactly appreciating the question whats new is constantly trying to add different features of early life in this area to our pro gramme the staff and board members spend a great deal of time examining and accepting articles that would otherwise be lost pilfered or destroyed in this socalled process restoration of artifacts to usable or workable condition is another important factor just now older artisans are becoming scarce through sickness andor death and younger volunteers do not have the time in this hectic life we seem to lead to devote the long hours necessary to restore our acquisitions this museum is the property of the citizens of the town of pickering and runs almost entirely on volunteer labour we would be interested in hearing from anyone whose peculiar talents or enthusiasm could help keep this valuable asset alive and growing w bemacki of town of pickering museum brougham telephone clerks dept town of pickering municipal offices sheridan mall is pleased to have many interesting displays and demonstrations from the town of pick ering museum all weekend as a highlight of their old fashioned celebrations
