in last thursdays election mr hodgson who won his third consecutive term and mrs britnell in her first provincial race both said thursday night that they would run again next time mr lewis however said he felt he couldnt do any belief than he did thursday he will not run again he said the hodgson an nouncement surprised some observers who felt he would retire from a long political career after one more term there was speculation- that newmarket mayor bob forhan a converted liberal might lead the york north pcs in the next election but the new minority conservative govern ment and the prospect of an abbreviated term may have convinced t hodgson to look ahead to a fourth candidacy mrs britnell in her second term as mayor of king township said she would not run for mayor again next year en couraged by her strongs second place finish thursday she said she will concentrate her energies on provincial politics after her municipal term ends mr showed no surprise or disap- 3fpoinfment-at-ithe- york- v north results during his victory speech thursday night he said he had i predicted a tight race from the start but voter f confidence in his party clearly has eroded since 1971when he outpolled the com bined total of his two opponents on thursday 6731 more persons voted against mr hodgson than voted for him he won 12891 votes while mrs britnell got 10366 and mr lewis 9256 in 1971 mr hodgson took 15557 votes 1420 more than the combined total for mr lewis and- liberal george timpson mrs britnell led the liberals who finished last in 1971 into a respectable second place both she and mr lewis stressed a slow con trolled growth policy- for york region during their campaigns mr lewis picked up 1220 more votes thurs day than he did in 1971 and fared particularly well in newmarket where he won 20 of the 59 polls thursdays rain- soaked balloting at tracted a 682 per cent voter turnout in york north in 1971 73 per cent of the voters turned out mr hodgsons vie tory although much less decisive than in 1971 was never in doubt as the results rolled in thursday night he won or tied for pc incumbent easily bests local candidate stouffville while the official totals in york north riding showed incumbent william hodgson won a significant victory ndp candidate bob lewis placed a respectable second in his home municipality of whit- churchstouffville the official overall totals in the riding showed mr hodgson with 12891 margaret britnell 10366 and bob lewis 9256 in whitchurch stouffville mr hodgson won handily with 1936 votes but mr lewis was second chalking up 1629 mrs britnell picked up 1553 votes in the town although she placed second to mr hodgson in a number of polls mrs britnell won only four of the 28 polls in whitchurch stouffville mr lewis won in eight polls and mr hodgson led in the remainder mr lewis showed strong support in stouffvilles east end winning three polls there with 225 votes as against 173 for mr hodgson and mrsbritnehs 132 mr hodgsons largest victory was in two polls in the votes to 114 for mr lewis and 119 for mrs britnell voter turnout in the riding was 682 per cent- but the percentage turn- put in whitchurch- stouffville was 651 per cent the lead in 109 of the ridings 170 polls his biggest victory margin came in king township the home of both mr hodgson and mrs britnell mr hodgson collected 2815 votes almost 900 more than mayor britnell and won 26 of the 30 polls mrs britnell won only two king polls and tied with mr hodgson for the lead in two others the conservative candidate won all five municipalities in the riding and ran strong in newmarket where he got 3526 votes mr lewis was second in newmarket with 2950 while mrs britnell got 2859 in aurora- mr hodgson won with 2150 while his challengers split the other votes almost equally mrs britnell got 1773 mr lewis 1756 mr lewis came second on his home ground of whitchurch stouffville but he still ran 300 votes behind mr hodgsons leading total of 1936 mrs britnell made it a tight race in vaughan the ridings newly an nexed area but mr hodgson still came out on top with 1945 votes mrs britnell trailed by 55 votes in vaughan durham north no clear cut victory durham north no major pattern ap peared from the voting in durham north riding last week which elected incumbent bill newman pc by a narrow margin over liberal clare morrison t however the pickering airport issue seems to have made an impact in those areas affected by it mr morrisons detriment in the final official count bill newman had 11206 votes 111 ahead of
