the tribune thursday nov 15 1973 4 just f olio w the plunk plunk by jim thomas stouffville just follow the sound of the musk commented a staff teacher at summitview public school when i enquired concerning the principal during the noon lunch period friday the door of a second floor classroom was closed but the plunk plunk plunk of several ukeleles was audible through the hall i knocked then entered inside were fourteen tow and girls sealed in a semicircle and listening intently to their teacher mr lome boadway each held a ukelele and strummed it in unison on command however this was no ordinary class no ordi nary students it was a volunteer f ng to sacrifice a portion of their lunch period and obviously enjoying every minute of it there are actually four classes the princi pal explained later two for ukeleles and two for guitars group one is for beginners and group two for advanced in total about eighty pupils are involved the boys and girls have their own instruments and take them home following each practice there are two noonhour sessions each week and two at 330 it all started about six years ago mr boadway said a few students had guitars and wanted some help last june parents attending the openair graduation exercises were thrilled by the performance of these young people they also play at the annual christmas program its really quite elementary says the principal modestly its a fun thing and they all scca to enjoy it mr boadway admits he knows more about ukeleles than guitars and advises budding guitarists to take private lessons if they wish to advance their learning past the fun stage he feels the association may encourage the boys and girls to continue the training later on and perhaps strive to join the junior and senior bands at the high school with the fall term only 2i months old the beginners already show real promise the advanced musicians are just that advanced with a repetoire of several numbers they sing while they play members of the ukelele band include beginners mark boadway robin donn martha harrott sandra keeping susan mattison beth mcbride mike mumford teresa rae heather raymer brenda steel valerie stevason darlene governmenf ministerial orders have placed upon many property owners in our area first on march 2 1972 the land designated as noiseland in connection with the proposed pickering airport was frozen to prevent any construction those who had the previous day the right to be granted a building permit for a house or other structure found that this right had been miniroyal at lamitie stables th volunteers of card have done publicity chairman mrs walter j pady said lamitie stables is north on the 5th concession from the gormley sideroad removed although since that date i have been able to help a few owners get building permits for reasons of hardship the order still stands and no one affected has received any compensation for this loss of the right he or she had prior to imposition of the ministerial order the same situation has arisen in connection with the parkway belt some owners have found that despite prior municipal approval they no longer can proceed with long established plans for expansion or construction and have been deprived of rights they paid for in pur chasing the properties i do not believe government should compensate for loss of anticipated rights or privileges such as is faced by those who acquired agricultural land and hoped to develop it however it is unfair of government to remove existing rights without compensation and i shall continue to press for either lifting of such ministerial restrictions or compensation for the loss of rights suffered by the owners at our f great used car and truck inventory we have a wide selection of fully this question was posed to mayor gordon ratcliff at a press interview friday under the act the mayor explained the chairmans position is filled by appointment mr ratcliff feels this procedure should be changed an election is a healthy thing he agrees the cost however poses a iroblem the mayor said it could cost each candidate up to 10000 an almost prohibitive figure many capable persons would be hesitant to run and im one who feels all election expenses should be curbed the issue has been shelved for the present mr ratcliff said question the former village of stouffville is now a part of the town of whitchurchstouffville do you feel this will detract from centennial celebrations in 19j7 answer stouffvilles name has been retained and the former village is still the main urban centre within a larger area so there should be no lessening of enthusiasm the present council must begin working on this program soon im pleased to see that a meeting has been arranged to begin pre paration of stouffvilles history to assist with this project a sum of 200 question what is the future of the area along main street west to ringwood and the stouffville gormley road from ringwood to gormley answer i anticipate the south side of main street to be an industrial zone through to ringwood the north side is rather piecemeal at present and it will take a major development to clear it up as for the stretch of highway frontage from ringwood to gormley i expect no largescale buildup it is good farming land and should be maintained for that use it would be impossible too for the town to provide services so great a distance i envisage some commercial buildup at the ringwood corner question has council submitted a bid on the present post office site answer the council has requested first consideration when the site is placed on the market its a federal matter but the municipality is usually given first chance the board of directors of classic communications limited is pleased to
