the tribune thursday nov 8 1573 turns sod for new wing markham a resident of markhaven senior citizens home for more than 11 years 88- yearold john scobie will turn the sod for a new- wing nov 11 at 3 pm the addition will complete the building and include infirmary- facilities a greenhouse lounge at the north end to capture the afternoon sun and an ingenious room where residents may do their own dripdry laundry triple the craft and activities areas and increase accomodation from 43 to 75 residents markhavens water enthusiasts would like to size a pool added also a hea t ed indoor therapuetic type vith easy access for the many handicapped people but this would have to come through donations as the present building budget cant accomodate the added expense if it could be built while construction is underway the cost could probably be kept to 35000 said administrator lois neely the new wing is being built without government grants even though the province is refusing capital grants for construction of senior citizens homes we feel we have not alternative but to go ahead stated hugh inees chairman of the board i there is a constant demand for the kind of service markhaven is offering and even though we know well never have enough beds to meet the need we feel we must do everything we can to serve as many as possible he said markhaven offers a program for seniors living at home with younger people who work during the day rather than stay alone they spend the day in happy companionship and activity at markhaven there is also a foster home program placing seniors with kind hostesses in the community barbara stewart has been the organist at st andrews presbyterian church in markham for the past 35 years a reception in her honor was held at the conclusion of the morning service sunday jim thomas armchair chats a war veteran remembers geo v grose this sunday is rememberance day but to us who recall vividly november 11 1918 it will always be armistice day peace finally came to a warweary old world on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour as our newspapers dramatically reminded us what memories crowd in as each one of us thinks back to the little part we played in that war that was to end all wars a war that went on and on for four tragic years of suffering sorrow death hatreds and privations then as an aftermath a world wide epidemic of spanish flu that caused more deaths than the combined war casualties of the nations involved i was in saskatche wan when war broke out a reporter oh the regina leader i still recall the milling crowds waiting outside for our special edition that had just gone to press the only real news was the screaming heading war declared against germany but this was greeted with such a wild roar of ap- proval one v reminded of a quote from kipling scratch a civilized man and you discover a savage although i enlisted in the spring of 1915 and went to england in september it was not until after the canadians captured vimy ridge on easter sunday of 1917 that i got to france my first battle over the top was near lens on aug 21 it was really an unimportant scrap as battles go entailing a see saw struggle over a few chalk trenches but ill never forget the sheer terror of the bombard ment that launched our attack followed by the fury of enemy guns all hell was suddenly let loose and we in the midst of it the dreadful thunder of heavy guns shrapnel bursting all around us and rising and falling above allother sounds the wild staccato of machine gun fire like giant devils typewriters comrades were going down all around me and i never expected to live through it god was good and i escaped with only a minor wound but our casualties were very heavy for next evening when we were relieved our company of 200 could muster less than 40 survivors though a few came in later my second battle after wandering around france for several more months of discomfort mjnor adventures and boredom was even more bloody terrifying and tragic it was fought under terrible winter conditions absolutely without parallel this side of hades as anyone who experienced trench warfare in flanders fields can testify our batallion took part in the capture of passchendaele ridge on nov 6 1917 we marched soaking wet already through the desolate ruins of ypres and beyond hells fire corner a few days later i floundered wounded in the head and neck through acres of vile yellow mud sometimes up to my armpits finally reaching a dressing station where the wound could be properly cleaned and bandaged there we could at last relax and be comfortable a few days later i was on a red cross hospital train bound for a base hospital and before christmas back in england dear old blighty able to see my sweetheart again however i was still in the army and we did not see canada until september of 1919 my wife and i settled in ontario chiefly because i did not have uie heart to take her west to the bald saskatchewan prairie after the beautiful english landscape in which she had been brought up it seems incom- prehensable that after the carnage and sufferings of world war one our crazy old planet should have become involved in another global war less than a quarter century later supposedly years of enlightenment and progress inevitably it ended just as inconclusively with hatreds and resentments still unsatisfied yet wars still go on with no lessons learned from history what a travestythat man made in the image of god should resort to such bestial and utterly ineffectual means of settling their differences or satisfying grandiose ambitions for more power super brute 74 this is what belter engineering looks lita at alouette better engineering isnt just a catchphrase the new
