circulation canadian community newspapers association and ont ario weekly newspapers association second class mail registration number 0896 i editorials let common sense prevail what is humane what is inhumane this decision must rest with officials of the ontario humane society they walk a thin line their task is dif ficult and their efforts unaddreciated more often they are criticized for what they dont do too seldom they are praised for what they accomplish their work relates to cruelty to animals with prevention rather than prosecution their goal there are occasions however when the society extends its authority to a point of being ridiculous the cancelling of the greased pig com petition at markham fair friday was such a situation in our opinion there is nothing about such a contest that can be looked on as cruel in fact if anyone is open to injury it is the boy whos brave enough to take on such a chore the problem is no one really knows what is cruel and what is not if catching a greased pig falls within the definition so also does roping a calf in a rodeo and what about a wounded deer left to slowly die in the bush is this not a form of cruelty the trapping of muskrat are our methods humane unfortunately the animals concerned cant speak for themselves so common sense must prevail meetings to the people the whitchurchstouffville rate payers association is doing good work and while its interests and activities are confined mainly to a particular area ward 2 of the municipality the organization has on several occasions introduced issues vital to everyone results have been encouraging but attendance at meetings has fallen off since the association was first formed the electorate once all fired up has lapsed into a coma leaving the executive to carry the torch alone this should not be neither should the support large or small come onlv from one ward we therefore would suggest that the meeting place be changed from month to month there are centres other than ballantrae that are readily available the new locations would need to be advertised several weeks in advance then the association could correctly claim to be representative of whitchurch- stouffville in reality right now it is not editors mail need cooperative effort dear editor in reading the sept 27 issue of the tribune i must express disappointment over the lack of coverage given the annual stouffville trade fair i could find only two pictures both related to the fashion show and according to your reporters account that was the only real attraction i agree that this years show may not have rated as terrific but as one of more than 20 merchants who put in displays i feel the tribune could have helped considerably with pcitures and publicity looking through your papers ad vertisements from week to weed i notice that most of the merchants who sponsored displays do advertise regularily i know a lot of hard work went into these exhibits and without wishing to discount your report i believe quite a few hundred people did enjoy the show i personally would like to commend the merchants on their efforts and especially jim mckellar who headed it up i think next year if we the merchants the legion and the tribune work together this can become a major event in out town ged stonehouse manager triad travel service ltd editors note publicity about what pictures of what without wishing to take anything away from the merchants who participated the fashion show was the only live action to capture and hold the publics interest no writer or photographer no matter how creative can make something out of nothing dear editor at the public meeting in the cedar grove community hall sept 12 arranged by the north pickering project team in an effort to involve the local people in public participation for the cedarwood city project the people kept angrily insisting that a future meeting be arranged and that premier davis treasurer john white claude bennett and other politicians directly responsible for the scheme be in attendance to answer the im portant questions the people wanted an swered what we in pickering township and south ontario riding want to know is where has our own provincial representative bill newman been hiding these past 18 months when we have so desperately needed him to come to our assistance since his government dictatorially forced this unplanned costly pieinthesky scheme upon our community judith donaldson whitevale ont dear editor wed like to tell all our friends how much we enjoyed our visit back in stouffville after 2v4 years it was nice to walk again down main street and receive such a warm welcome from so many anyone coming to england from stouff ville is certainly welcome at our home were pleased to receive the tribune every week it helps to keep us in touch mr and mrs ben talbot v the laurels wantage road rowstock berkshire dear sir a recent cp story concerning the charges laid against pauline hallinger of new york points out once more the blind unreasoning prejudice still very prevalent in north america against wolves and other predatory animals it must be noted that miss hallinger has two pet cats which she obviously adores no doubt many people could quite easily describe her and many others like her as an animal lover yet many such people will without thought kill or maim a wolf coyote or other hunting animal because it has an image as a creature that kills without reason nothing could be further from the truth and fortunately more people in north america are coming to relaize that a world without any speicies of animal must be a poorer world what is needed is immediate legislation protecting the wolf in ontario an immediate withdrawal of wolf bounties by municipalities and stronger penalties for the morons who trap wolves shoot them or chase them to death with snowmobiles t t i hughes general manager sugar and spice fun in travelling is meeting people by bill smiley i promised thered be no more columns about england this one wont be but it will be about people we met there half the fun of travelling is the people you meet thats why i wouldnt be too keen on taking one of those tours where you go everywhere with the same forty or so people and are stuck with them for three of four weeks and dont meet anyone fresh for example while we were in london i found it pleasant to stroll down to the bar for a preluncheon pint while my wife was mud dling around in the room worrying about washing her hair or something for several days we formed a congenial group there a farflung group there was old jack from south africa with one aluminum arm and one ditto leg hed whack his ar- tificial leg with his cane to emphasize a point there was ron an australian dealer in stamps there was a highland scot there was an irish bartender and there was your blueeyed boy from canada english yanks and canadians were excluded other canadians that is we got along firstrate and there was an easy tolerance that i noticed during the war when there might be bodies of ten different nations on one squadron i didnt go after jack about apartheid or ron about australian treatment of aborigines and nobody went after me about our eskimos the irishman and the scot were a bit hostile but only about the english rather we talked about the important things in life heating bills about 50 a year in sa and less in sydney housing costs about the same everywhere wives about the same everywhere rotten kids ditto income tax ditto not very enlightening youll say but comfortable easy conversation with no strain or stridency then our wives would arrive and the commonwealth conference would break up until next day at noon we met dozens of interesting people like this easily and amiably the pub is the great leveller in canada people in the bar sit in their own tight little groups at a table a waiter serves them and they are like an island no contact with anybody else or if they are alonejthey sit at the bar and glower into the mirror or into their drink gloomily in britain its just the opposite if youre at a table you fetch your own drinks and anyone is liable tb sit down with you very casual first thing you know youre chatting next thing you know youre bosom chums example one night after a show we went into a pub for a drink and a steakandkidney pie three people sat down at our table chattering in what sounded like german it was dutch a girl newly married and living in london and her parents first time in england father spoke a little english mother had a big smile in five minutes we were chatting away like old friends father fetched his wife a gin came back looking ruefully into his three- quarters of an ounce said here dey just vet de bottom of de glass in holland and he held up thumb and forefinger about four in ches apart we parted in half an hour but only after the girl insisted we come and see her in london and gave us address and phone number it couldnt happen here our watering establishments are built for masochists or people who have good night vision and can see in the dark theyre not for companionship and friendliness example we were having lunch in a pub in north wales at the bar four brawny dirty welshmen came in and started hooting and hollering at a tremendous volume teasing the barmaid downing pints and drowning out any attempt at conversation my old lady who is not noted for her prudence modesty or reserve turned around and snapped shut up their jaws fell the barmaid silently applauded i thought one of them was going to wipe her off the stool with a backhander he was only a little guy about sixtwo and 220 pounds that cost me four fast pints while i babbled that she was only kidding and was really a delightful charming girl at heart twenty minutes later they were com plaining that wed missed the great eistedd fod in llangollen and annual competition of choirs from all over the world held right there because the bus service was slow one of them packed us into his van and drove us twenty miles to wrexham a fortymile round trip for him it may sound like a glorified pubcrawl it wasnt there are 800 pubs in greater lon don and we missed most of them but if you want to meet people no better way roaming around an af fair with a camera and four kids by jim thomas the 118th annual markham fair is history written into the record books as a record record crowds record exhibits record everything and as a judge in the mrsmiss markham fair pageant of j973 1 felt more a part of the show than ever before like i had actually contributed something to its success very little but something but markham fair any fair is supposed to be a fun thing a place where everyone goes for a good time everyone that is except me i look on it as an ordeal think of it twenty pounds of camera equipment on one side and four kids on the other each tugging in different directions that was sunday by midafternoon i was beat completely exhausted friday and saturday were really no better yes i was alone but searching the grounds for suitable pictures can get pretty hectic when youre five minutes off schedule and only catch a glimpse of the champions tail end leaving the ring and heading for the barn such was my fate funny how it goes some years at the fair its bang bang bang a dozen good shots the very first day everything seems to fall intoplace you dont arrange it that way it just happens and its great but when it doesnt its tragic a guy at least this guy tends to grow panicky shooting everything in sight worse however than drawing a blank on feature photos is the fact i couldnt find time to talk to people including some folks hadnt seen since school like in the arena i felt a tap on the shoulder and turned around to see a girl i used to rub elbows with back in fifth grade 13 twentyfour years ago we could have talked for hours i suppose but oh no i had to go they were judging livestock in the show ring and i desparately needed a picture of the winner so i left her standing there displaced by some smelly old goat that wouldnt know a red ribbon from a roll of toilet tissue but next year will be different ive vowed and declared that for one day out of four ill leave the camera at home and enjoy markham fair for what its worth long locks are lopped off short skirts for girls long hair for boys its a matter of preference by sons and daughters not by most parents however i feel that we as adults should not be too quick to condemn changes in style trends no matter how much they differ from oar day so at our house the hemlines crept up and the hairlines grew down until last weekend that was ddecision day and the i decision was unanimous the skirts could stay but the hair that had logo so down to the barbers trooped the two boys and their too long locks were quickly lopped off theyre human again but strange as it may seem the decision to return to the closecut look didnt come from mom and dad it was agreed by the boys themselves theyd had enough and so quite honestsly had we
