with the project as quickly as possible as the unprotected spillway was causing concern because of its potential danger to swimmers at the dam stouffville the flood control dam site north of stouffville secondary school which has been under study for development as a recreational picnic area was once again on council agenda june 12 with a proposal that it be turned into a miniature wild life sanctuary jim doble of whitchurch- stouffville conservation club informed council that he had contacted metro toronto and region conservation authority the ultimate jurisdiction over the area and had received favorable response to the idea mr doble said that his club would induct its own members as well as other volunteers particularly from public and high schools in setting up and maintaining the sanctuary and pointed out that it would be a rewarding and educational facility the main problem is time explained the con servation member plantings to provide proper cover for the wild life would have to be done in fall or spring the authority indicated that they would like to have councils opinion on the proposal a mtrca biologist would assist in planning the sanctuary which would be stocked with pheasant and wild fowl mr doble agreed that it would be impossible to stop local people from swimming in the reservoir but felt that increased plantings at the far end of the dam would provide sufficient coverage to make limited swimming compatible to the main wildlife theme the conservation club and the authority both consider picnic areas incompatible because they add to main tenance and pollution problems tagged as a major concern in maintaining a natural wildlife area is the domestic cat one animal which would not be welcome on the stouffville preserve the cat mr doble reported is responsible for fifty per cent of wildlife kills in lands policed by the club people in the vicinity would be asked to put bells around the necks of their cats so that pheasants and birds would have a chance of survival council appeared impressed by the sanctuary concept and requested mr doble to submit a written proposal ens pro whitchurchstouffville senior citizens week in
