18 the tribtne t1mrsd mav 31 1973 publichigh school integration condemned stouffvhxe opinions were refreshingly candid in the morning session of professional develop ment day at stouffvtlle district secondary school may 23 pane and group discussion examined the status of student teacher and administration in the system and of the school in this community represented on the panel were students laurie houston gr 7 bill kingsleygr a bill giles john hopper gr 11 and 12 teachers murray balshin and eric knabe parents harry bowes and sybil houston one theme presented with emphasis was the inadvisablilty of merging grades 7 and 3 into the high school system representatives on the panel said they found it impersonal and missed the support of m home room and school spirit of the public program they felt that their age groups werent mature enough to cope u ith the high school it wasnt geared to suit them consequently there were disciplinary- problems echoing this john hopper tagged the pupils in these grades a major problem that seniors resented them getting underfoot they look to us for respect but we really dont respond to them many of us feel that something should be done about the 7 and 8 situation a group discussion on this subject affirmed there were founded grievances against schooling these junior grades at the secondary they should never have been here it was con cluded the parcrs on the panel both supported stricter discipline at school and more guidance in chanelling students into courses based on capabilities for the post graduate years mrs houston active in stouffville business commented im amazed at the number of students with grade 13 who have applied for jobs but dont know where theyre going and cant make up their minds about a career although some staff teachers in he audience related the difficulties of channelling pupils in specifiic directions and some disputed that it should be done there was strong feeling that more guidance could be achieved with greater internal control of priorties set through discussion between parents pupils teachers and administration the community is not being given an effective roll in decision making it was asserted one group submitted that adiniinstration was presentuv a frightening and remote image that class work was being subjugated by excessive and indiscriminate use of the pa system a futher opinion was that a vice- principal should have a more active roll in decision making that it was a waste of capable talents to have him handling detentions and student absences a blacklash of the credit systems free choice discussion disclosed was being reflected in attitudes with permisiveness insidiouly creeping in and weakening the whole structure it weas suggested that the monoploy of the bussing system dictated the structure of school programs this along with part time jobs after school hours skimmed students from activities that might generate school spirit and a greater senee of belonging some spokesmen speculated that an activity session scheduled during classroom hours might be a solution in studentteacher relationship mr knabe said that in liis guidance work he had found discerning and will chose teachers who are en thusiastic no matter what the subject failure in the past i have blamed on the pupil now i believe it was i who failed we are here for the pupils not the other way round he concluded mr balshim promoted the idea that students should develop independent thinking teachers should try to guide them to answer not tell them mr bowes terming himself an oldfashioned parent who would like to see education with a minimum of frills sub mitted there was a umit to the teachers being buddies with their pupils mrs houston however disagreed saying that her own children had always responded better and learned more from a teacher they considered a friend speaking of the secondary school in relation to the com munity mrs houston commented that it should be open to all and promote programs such as summer classes for housewives this theme was expanded upon in 4 grojp discussion where it was established that the school was available for extracurriculum use if community recreation committees or individual groups implemented the programs it was also suggested that the high school could possibly be used as an extention of j seneca college ron hall superin tendent for area 2 schools concluded the morning discussions he commended the speakers on their frankness but cautioned you are talking around a great many areas you must decide on priorities then v an action plan should be tested back against statements rather than jump at quick solutions 2 million community centre plan for thornhill markham the town will apply for a 2 million grant for the new thornhill community centre following a council decision last week mayor tony roman announced that markham has negotiated a pur chase agreement for 15 acres of land at 900000 for a combination culturalrecreational complex that will be located on the northeast corner of john street and bayview avenue the land costs are not included in the 2a million but will be paid for out of the ad ministration lot fee ac count according to a press release at the meeting this property was the number one choice in a comprehensive study by the towns planning department to locate such a complex in thornhill mayor roman em phasized that the projects 214 million was tentative and nothing has been finalized we have been in vestigating sites in the area for over one and a half years and i am pleased that the number one site suggested by the planning department is under agreement to purchase by the town commented the mayor councillor gary kay said that councils action on the project will probably bo the most important decision it will make during this term of office hpwever following congratulatory remarks directed at councillor bob adams chairman of the committee overlooking the complex from councillors kay and roy muldrew the harmonious proceedings came to a halt its great to throw congratulations across the table but the price is an awful lot of money to spend for 15 acres of land for a cultural and recreational complex and i wonder if we can jolly well afford it charged councillor alma walker councillor adams admitted that if council had undertaken a long term study from the beginning it may have been cheaper but council was not considering the entire town of markham in dicated councillor walker with this new project for the thornhill area all youre doing is talking and thinking thornhill what about dickson hill box grove and cedar grove according to a report the complex will include major and minor ice arenas library community centre and a day care centre under the winter capital project fund markham will apply to the province for the s2a million following another vote council will request assistance of 750000 for a major addition to the municipal offices at buttonville the total projected cost of the thornhill complex is 2095000 mkmbfr or dkntlkirt society of ontario tmcoe coimtp denture j clinic r hwiy az 2 mijei n- of mt albert rd
