wonderful holiday sues hairstylists from sue and josephine merry christmas mr reindeer by v g shillington to all reindeer in the vicinity i have nothing whatever against you never was it in my power to aim a gun in your direction only once was i compelled to eat your flesh and that with con scientious objection so you see reindeer that little episode last night on vivian road was quite uncalled for even if i did on occasion speak out against your rude intrusion on the christmas scene let me now appeal to my fellow humans for a moment last night ladies and gentlemen my wife was cautiously driving east on vivian road minding her own businss when suddenly from the bush sprang santas sledpuller after taking a brief look at the datsun he threw himself wrecklessly against its side causing 10000 damage his mission completed he bounded on his merry christmas way believing that every otherwise disparaging story has a bright side i looked for one this time the car is in the body shop the planned prechristmas visits to my congregation are postponed the cost well lets leave it there the bright side is that it prompted me to write this article on christmas and reindeer i am sticking to my guns figuratively you understand that reindeer and their ho ho driver are intruders i will even go further they have been stealing under the guise of giving tiiey have robbed christmas of its true hero christ they have made out that the world of imagination is to be preferred over the real the net result of such prefabrication is the supremacy of santas gifts and the inferiority of the gift of god which is eternal life take christmas morning for example as the paper is torn impatiently from the boxes and the toys are tested the children will be taught to say politely thank you santa where is the parent who will dare to relate the real and beautiful ac count to his children who is willing to face the fact for himself that god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life is it easier to live in a makebelieve world it may be easier but not- better to all reindeer and their friends a merry christmas but remember there is a season for everything christmas is the one for christ dear sir your editorial on our family service which appeared in the december 10 issue was correct in all its facts but some of the conclusions made reflected the necessity for a better understanding of the context from which these facts were drawn first of all the family life centre has been functioning from its in ception without any assurance as to the source of governmental funding beginning as the dream of several couples in the local area a survey of stouff- ville markham and unionville revealed a critical lack of preventive and clinical counselling assistance for families and couples with emotional problems accordingly a group of sponsoring churches and private citizens from all three communities worked hard for many months to establish the centre from the beginning it was designed for all who needed help regardless of their financial ability to pay for such assistance and a look at the statistics reveals how wise the decision was to establish this centre in 1968 96 persons were given counselling assistance in 1969 119 persons were helped and in 19v 221 persons were seen and to underline this need for family services in southern york county a similar agency was established last year with the opening of the thor- nhillrichmond hill family service as we do hey also function primarily through funding from supporting churches and private citizens many wonder why there hasnt been support from the county or provincial governments for the family life centre actually this year we are applying for a provincial grantinaid but to qualify for such governmental assistance a community service must first be able to demon strate that it has adequate citizen support and par ticipation and is filling a valid community need this takes time and the fact that this service has grown into a fulltime agency handling many requests for educational and counselling assistance now en courages us to present a brief to government requesting financial support we too realize that regardless of how important the need is the total cost of this service is more than the churches and fund drives can sup port even though the family life centre is maintained on only one tliird to half the cost of comparable agencies in other ontario com munities this has been accomplished through the very competent management of all funds contributed to us in other words just as with hospitals and homes for the aged governmental aid is needed to provide the public with needed family counselling assistance ideally every social agency should be a balanced blend of local and governmental funding we are working as always towards these goals the board of directors jeweller plaza phone 2944540 watch jewellery repair drop in and
