like no other recent issue in this community while many including most ministers admittedly knew little or nothing of the films content the show was certainly suspect and therefore subject to some form of investigation we do not question such a stand rather we would commend it on too many occasions the church and its leaders have been too slow to action they have elected to sit back in their comfortable pews rather than rock the boat they fight a defensive kind of war rather than adopt offensive tactics when their cause is right it is this attitude that has placed the churchs position in jeopardy in recent years unfortunately as in protests of any kind the ranks of the good and decent folk are infiltrated by the extremists in this case the religious fanatics whose tactics and aims are far worse than the objectives of those they oppose this is what happened here it is rather frightening when or dinarily sane sensible people can allow their minds to become so obsessed with one single incident as to vent threats of physical harm on those with opposite views and opinions others to their shame were less physical and more verbal but just as vicious several such letters came to this office there were just as many phone calls but our opinion has not changed we feel that every adult man or woman should be so privileged to see and hear what he or she so desires and we would argue against the sacred right of anyone to stand in prejudgment v day october 5 monday oct 5 is vday in whitchurchstouffville its also voting day in markham the target is an optimistic 100 percent and we say optimistic with tongue in cheek after the dismal display of interest at both nomination meetings here in stouffville and in unionville in the yawning high school auditorium 176 out of a possible 6900 electorate attended at parkview school less than 200 out of a possible 17500 were present shameful but no newspaper no matter how critical or how convincing can force people to the polls while its sup posed to be a privilege many folks consider it also their democratic right to refuse theres little use flogging a dead horse but the fact remains this election is important important to elect the best candidate to do the best job that choice is yours exercise it buy a bar in this day and age when young people are fair game for criticism some warranted and some not its refreshing to compliment the kids of stouffville district secondary school on a pending project to begin next week commencing october 9 more than 1000 students from grades 7 through 13 will be going door-to- door selling chocolate bars in the stouffville area its nice to know they care show them we do too buy a bar and help put the project over the top its all part of a campaign to raise funds for 4 charitable organizations each one wellknown in this com munity the goal is 3000 editors mail dear sir your timely editorial stouff- villes private plum was very much appreciated it is a great pity however that it did not receive the same circulation as the original news of the advent of the rather stupid sex show scheduled for the arena i am almost inclined to believe the news media when it reports that only eight stouffville residents purchased tickets that demonstrates a fair degree of commonsense on the part of the citizenry but once more demonstrates clearly that the self- righteous minority can still dictate what a person can perceive with the senses what is the greater error that a few oddballs should see sexual slime as one reader put it or that a few other oddballs should dictate what the majority can see hear or even think well might we talk of moral dignity hitler marched six million jews to the gas chambers because they did not fit his theory of aryan supremacy in thought and deed the inquisition burned thousands who would not swallow the christian story and irishman fights irishman over this same question of con trolling the thoughts and minds of others another reader uses the term unabashed sensuality which i find is high praise indeed for the show and his other term garbage in my opinion is much more to the point however a person has precisely the same right to see such a performance as his brother has to take part in a religious service on a sunday morning and again in my opinion about an equal chance of moral uplift at least there is no hypocrisy involved in purchasing a ten buck ticket to what is described as simulated sex plenty of room to question sanity however talking of morals thousands of arabs slaughtered thousands of arabs last week in a battle of privilege the privilege to see who should carry out the genocide of two million israelis not one person marched down main street to protest not one longhaired protester appeared outside the russian embassies anywhere in the world in fact a resounding silence shattered only by the cries of maimed children oh stouffville i forgot a few oddballs did scream bloody murder about moral dignity and the naked form kenneth h tinker 73 drakefield road markham dear citizen after more than a year of planning and struggling the conclusion of a much anticipated project was reached sept 23 at long last the into a suitcase or two and a duffel bag and off they go he had decided after a couple of years of waiting table and selling vacuum cleaners that there might be something in that higher education stuff after all and went back last year unfortunately i promised that if he buckled down id give him some financial help he buckled down just enough to get through his year so this year im stuck with paying his fees as far as eating goes hes on his own got him off on an early bus bound for halifax with a big box of books and frayed shirts and one suitcase mine bulging he was full as usual of boundless optimism and great expectations no problem kim is another kettle of fish or fowl a year ago we took her off to university got her registered found her a place to live and made about four long trips in six weeks to allay her loneliness buy her more clothes and change her living quarters twice she quit at christmas and my stony heart bled tears when i counted the dollars down the drain she was ill for a time then she went 123 year old log cabin was moved from the property of mr and mrs philip canadian homestead an tiques to a preselected site on the markham museum grounds it was indeed a wonderful example of what community cooperation and effort can do the markham district historical society is deeply grateful to everyone who had a share in this project whether in dollars to help pay the cost of moving or in time and a helping hand a special thankyou is extended to the following the bell telephone town of markham puc town of markham police department ontario provincial police ontario department of highways markham economist and sun the stouffville tribune mr john salmon for polishing up the old fire truck home smith limited and mr ed brown for ably and willingly arranging the final details of the moving and last but certainly not least matthews bros langstaff for their expert handling of the job thankyou one and all john lunau president hard luck what some fans wont do to win a ball game through ten straight innings of the greenwoodclaremont fastball league final ralph jones an ardent greenwood rooter sat in the claremont stands on a horseshoe his sacrifice was not in vain greenwood won the game 64 and the championship 3 games to 2 out into the world to seek her for tune she discovered that the streets of the city were paved with soot not gold after a few months of being broke or working she chose the lesser of three evils and decided to go back to school after an incredible delay and weeks of agonizing anxiety for her mother her application was ac cepted dealing with university bureaucracy is like dealing with the government i took her down and we checked out the university she liked it to my amazement i think what sold her was that an english professor we talked to introduced himself by his first name had long hair and a beard and when he stood up turned out to be in his bare feet she had expressed a desire to get out of the city sick of the smog traffic and everything else that goes with it she wished she could go to college in a small town i pointed out that small towns do not boast universities but this was as close to it as you could get campus surrounded by orchards a river winding through it well out of the city proper no heavy traffic within two miles by sheer good luck caught the last bed in a girls residence its a co operative with 14 girls they do their own cooking cleaning and make their own rules great a girl who lived in the house said it was fine a stones throw from the college it was a mess but professional cleaners were coming in to clean decorate and put everything in order then the doubts set in dad how can i get along with 13 girls what if my roommates dont like me waitu they see me come in with my guitar in jeans and sneakers and so on in my jovial fatherly way i retorted look kid 25 years ago i was living with 17 other fellows in a room the size of yours and we got along the answer was typical of all kids the minute you start talking about the tough old days yeah yeah i know dad but that was in camp and you had no choice and ive heard it all before for once i was firm she was actually pleased by my firmness all settled so we took her down on a sunday to get settled the house was still a mess no cleaners no drapes up no pillow cases two or three girls struggling around with furniture no heat in the house on a cold drizzly day it was bleak and dreary and her spirits went down like a ther mometer in an ice bucket typically she hadnt even packed a sweater i left her the one i was wearing when we left she looked as- woebegone as a drunk at a tea party her mother moaned softly all the way home and has been wringing her hands ever since well see portraits of the past most residents will recall this scene on the main street of stouffville if they dont the village council of that day certainly does it was the moving of the former sellers family home to a site on manitoba street the dat was sept 7 istfi four years ago jas thomas utf 4whb from a boy to a man by jim thomas at what specific stage in life does a girl become a woman a boy a man on what day at what hour what minute is the metamorphosis from adolescence to adulthood complete no one can say no one knows for v it varies both mentally and physically with the individual and it can occur gradually or suddenly depending on cir cumstances environment heredity on many things v for 13 year old rick marshman of goodwood the change came at exactly 440 pm saturday sept 26 in the final inning of an ontario peewee fastball game in the stouffville park 9 he cried not in private or for himself but openly and for every guy that comprised an important part of the hometown team he felt he had let them down t called out for a leadoff at third base while executing a determined race for the plate with the tying tally stouffville lost 4 3 and while the kids in the cardinal red colors jostled and pummeled each other a lad in white and green with the dirt of the infield still clinging to his cleats stood alone his head bowed the cheers of the victors and the moans of the defeated still ringing in his ears for this teenage lad the minutes that followed the umpires thumbs- out sign must have seemed like an eternity forgotten for the moment were games past when the same propellorlike arm had carried the same group of boys to the brink of an ontario title forgotten for the moment was the tremendous power behind the swing of his bat that had resulted in extrabase hits in this and previous games forgotten for the moment was the secondchance match between the same two teams seven days ahead that could square the series too many of us live only for today i took two of my own boys to the game saturday although a little hazy on the rules they still love the sport whether bashing the ball into the neighbors backyard or just watching the action from the sidelines naturally the sudden ending left them totally confused i attempted to explain with negative results but why is that boy crying asked son barry thats not a boy i answered assuredly hes a man j players promise on the rear of an ontario minor hockey association players card is a printed pledge that should be read by every boy and studied by every parent it is entitled players promise and goes as follows i promise to be a good sportsman to play fairly under all conditions to give opponents a fair chance and not to take unfair advantage of any opponent to win modestly and p receive defeat with a smile to remember that its only a game and to give credit to the team that wins i promise not to question or dispute the referees decisions and to abide by the rules and rulings of the league i promise to place my school work ahead of hockey and refrain from playing if hockey in terferes with my progress at school i promise not to smoke and to keep proper hours so that i may be at my best for the team and so that i may grow up to be a good player and a healthy citizen i promise to obey my coach and team officials at all times to obey my parents my school teachers and my teachers at church or sunday school in this way i know that i will be well coached in all phases of my life and shall be well prepared for a useful life when i grow up its a motto worth remembering for boys of all ages
