living and you your family life centre we often think of a family in the group sense ie four five or more persons living together related through marriage and birth with a commonality of interests and goals and from one point of view this is more or less an accurate description of a family unit but there is another perspective of each and every family which is equally valid and just as accurate here at the family life centre it is this second perspective of the family which we use most often and which i will try to explain here a family unit is also a collection of individuals each of whom are very unique and different from anyone else in the family each family member differs from the others in a viariety of ways physically emotionally scholastically socially etc even twins or triplets have their own unique qualities as their mothers will tell you these differences provide the truly rich panorama of skills and interests which can add so much to any family provided these differences are seen as worthwhile and accorded the respect and ac ceptance they should receive yet this is where many family problems begin the differences are frequently seen as a threat to the family and to the traditional way in which the family has come to live and function but why are differences so often seen as threatening why are they resisted so strenuously as an example lets look at a fairly common family problem the son who doesnt try hard enough at school generally the parents approach this boy with one basic message that to fail in school is to fail in life the son responds by ap pearing to not take the matter seriously at all upon inquiry he may explain flunking a year as needing some more time to understand his work the parents come to the centre upset and confused by this difference in attitude on the part of their son why cant he see it our way their concern is genuine their intentions honorable and their exasperation often monumental yet after a few family visits to the centre we come to see the boy in several new dimensions he is an expert ice skater and a top player on a local hockey team he is also very good on the drums and plays regularly with the high school band and a local rock group he talks enthusiastically about a few of his compositions and even has hopes of making a recording soon with a small company in toronto it becomes apparent that he has several talents and skills but they are different from what the parents see as most important ie education the goal then is to help the parents refrain from any tendency to see the situation as being an all or none proposition that their son is not lost or a failure because music is most important to him likewise the son can be helped to appreciate that it was through school that he first learned the drums and experienced the enjoyment of playing with others in other words the qualities which make us different are the same qualities which enrich the potentiality of each family it is not necessary nor is it practical to feel that basic differences must be rejected and only similarities accepted and this is as valid a concept for our youth as it is for adults as both of these age groups often slip into this unfortunate pattern with those who are different so we use the family visits at the centre as opportunities to practice a more accepting attitude which really is only extending faith and trust in the worth and abilities of those who are our family mario d bartoletti ma executive director phone 2942371 lovely wedding pretty bride colorful program planned stouffville
