for york county newmarket school is out this week for farm boys and girls and they will be active right away in farm operations its great when they can take on a project of their own and its really big if it makes spending money for next year heres an idea thats sure to work start one or more dairy bull calves on milk or milk replacer switch them gradually to calf starter and keep them going to about 200 lbs change them to a growing ration 13 percent protein with antibiotics added and feed free choice for about 90 days the calves should weigh about 500 lbs at this stage and go in the extra heavy veal class there is a growing demand for these calves on the toronto market they were selling at around 36 cents last week so that each calf brings around 175 feeds costs have to come off of course and they will come to 65 to 75 there are lots of other costs that should be added but they arent the out-of- pocket kind so that the gross profit appears quite good the original value of the dropped calf would have to be taken into ac count the big point is that calves could be grown out like this on many dairy farms without increasing building overhead or labour costs so the idea could be used as a good sideline as well as a good family project 4h projects are very popular in york too meetings for all clubs will be held regularly now and there are many special events dan mcclure of newmarket is our delegate to 4h leadership con ference at guelph this week a special science seminar also at guelph will be attended by wendy norris of pefferlaw pauline johnson of belhaven and
