mrs symes looked lovely chatting with folks from near and far morley more acclimatized to the great outdoors appeared to enjoy every minute of the afternoon and evening swapping stories about the good old days with men he had worked with and for mrs symes the former bertha pilkey was born on the 5th concession of uxbridge the daughter of joseph and susan pilkey and one in a family of nine she uxbridge and at ashburn going out to work as a carpenter at age 15 morleys skill with a hammer and saw needs no telling hes engineered the raising of more barns than even he can recall beginning initially with frank beach of siloam and then with the late john ashenhurst of goodwood his very first structure was on the property of bob nesbitt across from ballantrae school where a son bill now resides shes still standing too he said morley has been a jack of several trades as a young lad he would work on barns in the summer and with a saw mill in the winter later in his spare time he ran a steam engine on a thresher unit for jack norton sr north of claremont and oscar wilson of brougham but giving out with the old heaveho was his first love handling a volunteer work force that sometimes totalled over 200 men at one time he employed 15 men himself even with marriage on his mind he raised a barn on the for mer tom gostick farm in pickering the day before his wedding but june 16 1920 was something special morley and bertha were married by rev lambert at the methodist church par sonage in claremont and they left in morleys model t for a 2 day honeymoon stay in toronto on their return they lived for a year at her fathers place then to goodwood the house now owned by mrs russell dowswell the symes home on from the ministers study by vg shillington rr3 stouffville most people like to think they are right they have some very strong opinions about the vital issues of life and death yet they are never really sure whether they are right or wrong because they have no way of checking their opinions against unshakeable truth today the popular feeling is that everyone has a right to believe what be wants sounds good doesnt it you have your religion and ill have mine and well all end up in the same place and live happily ever after that kind of thinking may satisfy someone who doesnt mind living with his head in the sand still i am quite sure you are not that kind of person you are intelligent and you like to be sure you are on the right track you probably want to know and be free from the nagging doubts that haunt you when you stop to think but how is there any way of checking ones views against a settled absolute truth the answer is yes one man and only one stepped unto the worlds stage and proclaimed i am the truth how bold you say right indeed how bold unless he was stating fact not opinion a very large book has been written about this man the book is the bible and the man is jesus christ check your opinions about yourself your family and your world against the truth of the bible and be sure you have a question yes i thought you would how does anyone know the bible is truth now that question is worth answering but not in this article a proper answer would take a whole volume and many volumes have been written already if you care to investigate further secure a copy of the book by ej young thy word is truth published 1957 by eerdmans on the other hand you may want a more im mediate and direct answer to your question you will want it to be positive as well here it is to know whether the bible is truth or not is to read it carefully and sincerely for yourself start with the four gospels do a thorough job on them and you will be surprised by truth mr and mrs morley symes married fifty years june 16 1970 welcomed 250 guests at an anniversary gathering in the stouffville masonic hall jas thomas get the most lloyd avenue was the first built in that subdivision morley did most of the work himself with assistance from charlie atkinson and ralph davis the lot cost 315 while bertha admits to being a homebody morley has been ex tremely active and still is hes a charter member of richardson masonic lodge dating back to 1929 a past master and grand lodge officer and a member of the oddfellows since 1940 he loves to hunt and fish and only last week landed several big beauties in a trip back north he belongs to the stouffville lions club and both are members of the stouffville united church morley has always been interested in local sports as a young man he both played with and managed the goodwood football club he also played on the goodwood lacrosse team he has always liked hockey too and has driven stouffville teams many hundreds of miles from town to town mrs symes enjoyed living in goodwood and likes stouffville but still retains an inborn love of the country i think i could still milk a cow she said she sure can bake replied morley with a self- satisfied smile mrs symes has two brothers living albert and andrew morley has one sister margaret mrs martin gall of claremont while the two had requested no gifts they received some just the same including a gold- handled hammer from norm neal victoria street and a gold broom from a cousin jean symes in toronto in addition they were the recipients of many lovely cards and beautiful bouquets of flowers the tribune is pleased to add its
