thursday june 25 1970 the tribune page 3 town of markham study re development plan for main st business area 5200000 scheme no 7 to parkway markham a j200000 main street re development plan ex tending from hwy 7 on the south to parkway avenue on the north was revealed for the first time june 17 before a joint meeting of markham town council and planning board the detailed explanation of the scheme was outlined by ian macpherson a director with the firm of murray v jones and associates limited urban and regional consultants while there is no thought of implementing any phase of the study immediately mayor alma walker said later that improvements within the area as defined were long overdue while members ruled it premature to make public all aspects of the venture one site slated for change is on the southwest corner of robinson street and main where the present theatre building now up for sale would be removed and a shopping mall created to blend in with the iga and drug store now located there the bank of montreal to the south would be included in the commercial complex on the east side of main a new bank of nova scotia building is planned other proposals include a new 5- storey office building to replace existing premises of thos n shea real estate company a new supertest service station on the northeast in tersection of hwys 7 and mayor alma walker of markham town holds one of several maps pertaining to a suggested redevelopment plan for an area of main street from hwy 7 north to park way avenue jas thomas 48 a new restaurant and dining lounge two boutiques and an addition to the iga constituting a net gain in potential floor area space of 33300 square feet this figure the report revealed did not include other suggested com mercial projects that could conceivably come the report warned against further increase in new retail sales space that it said had already reached a saturation point on a per capita basis the amount of retail and service commercial space was adequate to serve a market population of 13200 persons markham towns population at present is about 10000 with a potential of 20000 objectives of the plan include 1 assist in directing new development to the most appropriate sites within the central area 2 provide an administrative and legislative framework within which to encourage new development and the rehabilitation of existing development 3 provide control over the design and appearance of develop ment so that it is com patible with existing ar chitecture 4 encourage the provision of additional offstreet parking facilities in the area adjacent to the primary commercial core 5 encourage the development of residential uses along the creek bank to provide a pedestrian- oriented market near the core area while the cost in total may seem high it was pointed out that im provements would result in the acquisition of added assessment to more than offset the debt incurred mayor walker said the means by which the 200000 would be raised had not been decided much of the success of the program will in large measure depend on the co operation of owners and tenants working or living in the central area the report explained it was noted too that collective action by merchants businessmen and private enterprise would assist in seeing the project through to a successful conclusion town solicitor lachlan cattanach said the area in question was now governed by a holding by law a type of freezing order that could not be retained for an indefinite period mr macpherson recommended the in troduction of a private bill to retain this means of control blue hills academy receives 1100 student gift richmond hill a cheque for 1100 has been received by blue hills academy a residential treatment centre for the 1100 to the blue hills academy in aurora we are certain that this contribution will be used for the benefit of young people less fortunate than most of us mr robert j sillcox chairman of the blue hills campaign to raise 209400 said certainly we are grateful for all the support we can get however it is always most gratifying when that support comes from youngsters wanting to help other
