wednesday dec 24 1969 the tribune page 3 little red schoolhouse hosts community christmas concert bv peter harris altona im a city- tvpe sure ive lived m stouffville for ten years ro but i was born in toronto and my life has always been city onent- aied so when the tribune editor asked me to attend the annual altoa christ mas concert i was a bit apprehensive as a matter of fact i was sure id be bored to death it was snowing the night of the concert nobody in their right mind would venture out on a night like this still i drove plugged on really through natures icv teeth walking to the hall i glued on my best smile and inside i nodded and spoke to the few people in the audience i knew grabbing a good seat i watched as the hall filled with folks where they all came from i dont know but i do know that it would have been hard to get another one in even with the help of some oversized shoehorn mrs lloyd britton acted as mc she stepped onto the platform and raised her hand for silence the noise kept up little kids were running up and down the aisle older folks in the back rows were dis cussing the weather or what ever people in altona talk about on snowy nights she tried shouting still no results finally a lady- began playing a familiar christmas tune on the thursday evening was christmas concert night at the altona community cen tre the nursery school class played an important part in the program the chil dren are left to right becky will jody williamson david britton lisa mc- ilowell beth smith and chris leblanc peter harris piano in a few seconds everyone in the hall had joined in the altona christmas concert for 1969 had begun as the evening progress ed i found that less and less glue was needed to keep my smile in place as a matter of fact i actual ly started to enjoy the show it all began with the first act a group of little nursery school kids three and four year olds they were herded onto the stage and after their teacher coaxed them to face the audience and take their iiands out of their mouths they sang two songs the songs were short and easy and the voices a little shy but the whole thing was cute the audience loved it between the group ef forts local youngsters music students rendered accordian and piano solos either all the budding pianists made the same mistake or one or two strings in the piano were a little off tune anyway they all stepped from the at this time of the year we recall with pleasure the many friends and supporters in york county and are pleased to have the opportun ity to extend seasons greet ings a merry christmas smart with their white blouses and shirts and red ties and they sang well too students from the glas gow school put on a puppet show twentysix of them crowded into four large cartons each about the size of a big refrigerator to operate their stick pup pets the boxes teetered back and forth and the kids inside giggled a lot it was a little hard to hear what they were saying sometimes but most of the words came through after a presentation by the congregation of the penticostal church which meets in the community hall every sunday santa himself arrived to com plete the evening the old gent just made it to the platform when it happened stampede every kid in the audience was on the stage after prying loose a few of the more tenacious ones saint nick handed out candies and oranges and the pro gram concluded as i walked from the hall i noticed that all the glue had melted but my smile was still firmly in place t had told mvslf it wouldnt but it did i had a good time sure the production wasnt in any way profes sional in fact it was en tirely the opposite it just wouldnt have made it at the royal alex or the okeefe but it made it in altona and thats what counts wayne kccd and his
