1969 15 clnts spot dragsters with aircraft two charged with dangerous driving markham twp wednesday at buttonville twp offices police chiefs from markham twp whitchurch twp uxbridge twp and pickering met to discuss the drag racing problem every day complaints roll in to their departments of dragsters using highways in the various townships the various police departments have done their ut most to catch the offenders but very few charges have been laid in an interview with chief harvey cox markham twp the tribune learned they discussed the prob- icm fully and came up with an idea of using an air craft to try and spot races in progress at 930 pm friday evening buttonville police office became an operations room members from the var ious municipalities received a briefing for the nights operations maps showing the various trouble spots were handed out to police officers by chief cox plans were for the aircraft to take off from buttonville air port containing sgl david dukes markham duty and nine cruisers many of the officers had to work overtime and this is where it becomes costly said ihe chief this was the first time police in the area have used aircraft and have been able to load of garbage inside a truck owned by ralph spademan of mark ham the truck was being re paired at the time and had to be towed away from nearby buildings the hy draulic gear would not function and the firemen had o use crowbars and a block and tackle to open doors on the truck to gel at the blaze it took over an hour to extinguish it thoroughly the blaze apparently started from an arc welder
