william duxbury is con cerned the change is long overdue he made this point clear at a meeting of the stouftville home and school association dec 4 mr duxbury j formed part of a panel of four local educators others included john mcmurray public school trustee lome boadway principal of summit- iview school and mrs pat bycr primary supcr- visor the moderator was v k sutherland prin cipal of orchard park the discussion was related to recommendations from the recent halldennis report on educa tion principal duxbury sug- jgested that educational re form to be practical should be implemented through the entire system from kindergarten through university he said that courses at the high school level were now available to meet the needs and abilities of in dividual students but ad ditional guidance instruc tion is required to help i students choose wisely while changes are need- j ed mr duxbury feels that new methods should not j b approved without care- j fill consideration he feels too that the program should be uniform across i the province if we have j a set of ideas in one area i and something entirely william duxbury different in another it will be organized chaos he said that since the group study meihod had advanced to grade 4 in stouffvilles public schools it would be necessary tor the high school to adopt a similar program to les sen the problems of changeover from grade s to 9 he said that it would be the responsibility of the area sperintendent to see that elementary and secondary schools are working closely together principal duxbury observ ed that while the new county board system would undoubtedly prove beneficial he would miss the close cooperation of board members as pres- enlly constituted im sure we will all feel more like a number under the new arrangement the per sonal association will be gone progress at own speed primary supervisor mrs pat byer termed the halldennis report the primary teachers philos- phy she said that every child should method pi oneered in stouftville was now accepted in such ar eas as whitchurch and east gwillimbury principal lome boad- way agreed that competi tion between students should be reduced but felt that it could never be completely eliminated he advocated a more re laxed policv on the use of school buildings as com munity centres particu larly the facilities that could prove advantageous for adult learning and rec reation mr mcmurrav contend ed that the high school was better suited for this purpose he suggested that the library within the high school could become a resource centre for ad ults they are expensive buildings and should be used as much as pos sible agreed mr dux bury on the question of start ing children in school at the age of three mr boad- way suggested that this recommendation had ref erence mainly to deprived boys and girls in depres sed areas who is goinn to pay for it asked mr dux- burv mrs bver and mr mc murrav both asreed that the childs greatest need at
