stouffville how can a critic criticize per fection the answer he cant the stouffville players presentation of the first fish at the legion hall nov 21 and 22 came as close to a professional per formance as any amateur organization will ever achieve crowd wise it deserved a better fate although the rather sparse audience thursday was replaced by an improved attendance friday the box office sup port still fell far short of former years the story was centred around the desire of a dis traught wife sylvia barr mary harris to restore her husbands selfconfi dence phil barr was play ed by frank mellon to accomplish this feat sylvia asks a close friend jerry hubley frank steele to obtain the services of a professional call girl lee carole elsa bevan sylvia nobly arranges a chance meeting between her hus band and miss carole a serious situation develops when phil becomes in fatuated with lee and syl via fears that their mar riage is headed for the rocks further complications occur when jerrys bride- tobe helen whitney tar- esa foulds visits sylvias home to announce her forthcoming marriage and finds jerry there with both sylvia and lee mary harris as the dis traught housewife was bril liant in fact her part was- without doubt the best performance in a female role ever played by a member of the players or ganization the audience caught up in both the drama and the comedy of her part reacted with ap preciative applause and laughter she had a volume of lines to learn and it was obvious she had learned them well in spite of the sometimes seriousness of her role nothing was lost every word was spoken distinctly and with feeling frank steele as the ro- meo friend of the family was himself superb his acting coupled with in describable facial contor tions added much to the enjoyment of the play his knowledge of a part can not be judged due to a rare ability to ad lib only the prompter could ever know frank possesses all the polish and assurance of a professional and any per formance in which he has a part is certain of suc cess frank mellon the mouse that becomes a man was an excellent choice for the part both he and mary characterized the typical husband and wife team as we see others but not our selves elsa bevan in the role of a call girl looked every bit the price of her self- evaluation with a few dol lars to boot her accent- a sometimes problem to un accustomed ears proved no handicap here she spoke her lines more slow ly a suggestion that could have come from director dennis empson himself no stranger to the stage taresa foulds as the premarital playmate of jerry hubley frank steele also spoke her part clearly and knew her lines well the stage construction appeared almost perma nent and the furnishings instead of attic hand-me- downs looked living room new the producer was jean harrott welcome service would like to call on you with housewarming gifts and information about your new loca tion the hostess will be
