the te1bine thursday july 11 198 page s i editors mail 1 dear mr editor allow me if you will please the time and space to comment on your t around col umn of june 27 1968 in which i am quoted re garding the hate litera ture of the past election along with other minis ters i am distressed by the manner in which the information was obtained and the distortions upon publication this is a prob lem encountered frequent ly by people interviewed by the tribune in the first place the m questions asked of me were done so while the re porter was sitting in his car while still running and blocking obrien av enue he had no pencil or paper to note the quota tions and i hesitate to think how long afterward he recalled the conversa tion for newspaper pur poses this farcical inter view was cut short when the reporter was forced to drive away because of a car waiting to get by i doubt that the reporters manual recommends this method of obtaining ma terial secondly the reporter now editor chose to omit one of my points al- though i stated that i did not agree with the prac tice of attacking an indi vidual and did not per sonally distribute the lit erature i also emphatic ally pointed out that in my opinion this material was not hate litera ture it is still quite le gitimate for canadians to publish facts and their opinions regarding them if public statements made by a public figure cannot be examined and analysed for the good of our na tion then we have grave problems i have large doubts that the judges of this hate sick smear literature really know what they are talking about because of the po litical connotations those distributing the literature in our church were asked to discontinue doing so finally but primarily i want to openly ack nowledge my support of my brethren in christ api fellow ministers in partic ular the adams and tnc ministry of the evangeli- cal mission who have been unjustly and inex cusably attacked i admire these good people and con gratulate them for their willingness to follow their convictions i recognize them as solid citizens of canada and choice serv ants of god and to those who have seen fit to dis qualify them from the christian ministry and unite them with satan i suggest that your thoughts and attitudes are indeed hateful and far more deplorable than your rea sons for objecting the menace of commu nism is very real daily strengthening its death grip upon our nation i have in my possession a copy of the quotations from chairman mao tse- tung printed in the peo ples republic of china and cunningly sent to stouffville in may 1968 from hong kong by the chinese communists in an attempt to establish an outlet here for the sale of this destructive liter ature since they have printed 350 million copies of this book this proce dure has undoubtedly been duplicated across canada and the western world i am concerned along with the adams for the welfare of your chil dren and the future of your country i suggest that you must be also someone must take a stand gordon r gooderham pastor stouffville baptist church dear mr editor i was more than slight ly amused at the righteous indignation expressed in such unrighteous langu age by a nottoocertain christian named e peters tribune thursday july 4 his letter as a whole was a contradiction of his fourth paragraph which reads it has always been my understanding that a chri stian is one who believes in the teachings of christ and does ones best to be christlike in his actions and thinking would it not have been more christlike on the part of mr peters if be fore rushing into print in wholesale condemnation of the stouffville minis ters he had checked to see how the information for roaming around sidewalk sale papular despite constant showers nil m iki 4 rft 3 5 jm despite inclement weather which prevailed throughout the afternoon and evening on friday the main street- merchants first sidewalk sale was successful and large numbers of shoppers travelled up and down the busi ness section inspecting and buying the special features of the day shoppers are seen here in front of wilkes clothes store staff photo houstons drugs added a touch of the west with a covered wagon in front of their store shown here along with merchandise for the special sale the man in the white stetson is the owner harry bowes staff photo ladies persisted despite the ram this customer was caught by our camera in a shower trying on a pair of shoes in front of lehmans shoe store had been gathered and what explanatory or miti gating remarks were made to the columnist the withering sarcasm by definition of one lit erary character the lan guage of the devil of mr peters third paragraph these fine upstanding men of the cloth who pro fess to be christians savours not of christ only one minister is re ported to have said he did not want to become in volved but all arc includ ed in mr peters charge is this rashness and haste in judgement christ like it is my opinion that all of the ministers under attack are ready to become involved in any thing that is warranted by a sanctified blend of christlikeness and intelli gence i shall not presume to speak for the other mini sters in the town but for my part it would seem both unmanly and un- christlike to attack any one mr trudeau or any other person through charges that i am not capable of support ing save by hearsay i do not say that mr- trudeau has no commun istic leaning i just do not know on the other hand i do not look upon the literature in question as necessarily hate lit erature many of my good friends are convinced that the prime ministers back ground and present polit ical bias constitute him a menace to our national welfare they do not hate him personally but they are sincerely crit ical of his philosophy and consider it their right and duty to make their fears known i support them in this right surely mr peters is a new reader of the tri bune he could hardly otherwise have failed to see that the ministers of this town have taken a stand on issues concern ing which they could speak with some author ity and conviction the hasty mr peters if he will accept the pun as coming without malice has the right name if he will drop the last letter s arthur walsh pastor stouffville united missionary church request for sr citizens housing markham township markham township council agreed
