oppor tunity through the edi tors mail to reply to mr cashmans letter and most particularly to the last paragraph where he states an investigation into the welfare mess should be made not by our local municipality but rather by queens park yes i agree mr cashman an investigation should be made by queens park au thorities but does mr cashman really believe that without any motiva tion queens park will suddenly wake up one morning and say ah theres whitchurch lets do an investigation on the welfare situation there i think not first things first as an elected repre sentative of the people and as chairman of health and welfare it is i believe my duty to acquaint my self with the welfare situ ation then to acquaint the ratepayers of whitchurch many of whom im sure were not aware of the magnitude of our welfare situation and then only then can we as a people make our voice heard at queens park mr cashman gives the impression that i am be ing discriminatory in elec ting to visit only those persons on welfare and that i should in fact make a survey of all the people living right across the township to find out the problems come now mr cashman i am neither a social worker or marriage councillor and besides i refuse to infringe on anyones privacy how ever your tax dollar and mine are feeding and clothing those on welfare 1 therefore will make it my business to know how our tax dollars are spent there is probably very little i as an individual can do to alleviate the welfare situation and it is unlike ly much can be done for the adult population on welfare but i insist that we must be concerned for the children involved for unless our provincial gov ernment takes real action now many of these child ren will be our welfare problems of tomorrow and where we have two on wel fare now we could have 20 in two generations the only solution as i see it is a program of re habilitation requiring highly trained costly per sonnel it can be done as has been proven by the hamilton welfare depart ment and i quote from the municipal world march issue the hamilton wel fare department has pro ven beyond the shadow of a doubt that giving enough time and attention to even the most difficult welfare families can result in re habilitation and removal from welfare rolls in the majority of cases they embarked on a project to prove that long term assis tance families would re- pond to concentrated at tention both in improving their way of life and in securing gainful employ ment the atten tion given seemed to be the prime factor of moti vation and it was almost as though the response was triggered by appreciation that someone was truly interested in their very real problems is this the answer for whitchurch very costly yes but we must often spend a great deal initially to save money eventually betty van nostrand gideon service rev j berkley rey nolds a member of the united church renewal fellowship will be the guest speaker at a special gideon service in
