concession roads the purpose is to raise money for the forth coming union villa to be built in unionville as a future home for senior citizens of markham township for weeks now the peo ple who have volunteered to do the walking have been working hard at get ting markham township citizens to act as their sponsor that is tb pledge a specific amount of money for each mile they walk the sponsor agrees for instance to put up twentyfive cents or any amount they wish for each mile covered by the walker who has approach ed them for sponsorship if they walk ten miles of the twentymile course they automatically donate 250 if they have pledged twentyfive cents a mile to the building of union villa the name walk of ages is a significant one it identifies the efforts of young people to do their part for older people senior citizens and a sdss places second in zone trials at markham stouffville track and field athletes of stouffville dist secondary school had an outstand ing day at the zone trials may 8 at markham they placed second to mark ham and ahead of pick ering college st andrews and bradford in total points the standings were markham 311 stouffville 206 st andrews 186 pickering college 167 and bradford 35 some of the highlights at the meet for stouffville included the outstanding mile relay cliff bass peter sanderson derek gresham andreas black- well won in record time of second in the 880 alan bacon was first in the intermediate high jump at 5 feet two inches peter sanderson was first in the intermediate triple jump at 39 feet 6 inches and second in the intermediate said mr ewen where men and their wives can enjoy an evening of relaxation its excellent exercise and age is no handicap all my horses are quiet and easy to handle mr ewen is presently preparing for a horse and 8 pony show may 25 and 26 on saturday ponies will participate for ribbons trophies and cash prizes sunday will be a junior horse show it will be class a competition with some of the best riders in ontario competing ben ewen displays the form that made him the leading instructor with the rca1p musical ride for thirteen years he has opened his own riding school at cone 7 whitchurch and the gormley road third in the junior pole vault at 9 feet keith leidtke placed first in the junior 440 at 574 and second in the 220 at 262 bob duxbury came sec ond in the junior 880 and the mile addition to adult committees peter scott and his wife diane of unionville have been meeting with young peo ple of markham town ship in order to iron out all the problems involved as it stands now the event is ready for the starting gun on may 25 on that date the volun teer walkers will meet at crosby community cen tre in unionville at 7 o clock in the morning for registration one hour later at 8 am they start walking groups of 100 walkers leave at twomin ute intervals until all the walkers are on the road an energetic sendoff will be given by the markham dist high school band the route of the walk is as follows from crosby arena on kennedy rd at the north end of union- villethe route will go up north as far as 16th av enue west one and one- quarter miles to the fifth concession north to the town line east on the town line to the 7th con cession south to 17th av enue east to the 8th con cession south from there to no 7 highway west to unionville then north on kennedy road to the fin ish point at crosby arena its 20 miles in all over both paved and gravel roads at intervals along the route there will be check points where the walkers are checked in as they pass and on the town line between the 6th and 7th concessions is a lunch stop where the youth cen tre will p r 6 v i d e free drinks and food for the walkers the project is being giv en the full and enthusias tic support of the ontario provincial police mark ham township police and the police of markham village as well a st johns ambulance unit will be on duty with a radio controlled ambu lance and ten volunteers ready for any emergency in addition the service clubs of the area are sup plying cars at any point in the route where a walker has had to stop the walk er is picked up and re turned to the starting point thus every contin gency has been anticipat ed with the determination to make the event a sue- cessful and accidentfree occasion four students at mark ham high school have sig nified their desire to run the 20 miles and other run ners may be added the official time for end ing the walk of ages is 8 pm at night but it is expected all walkers will be in well before that time at night a dance is
