answer to last weeks story concerning welfare i was shocked to read that a problem like this exist ed in the township of whitchurch it is a hard thing to say that so many welfare cases were preval ent in a small area like wilcox lake i am sure that this article has now been read by most of the people living in this area- and sooner or later an in vestigation will be held by the dept of health and welfare to remedy the situation back in 1965 when i took a survey of the popu lation for the ward sys tem i noted that 1046 people lived in the wilcox lake area according to the tribune 80 of 312 on welfare lived there or in other words 250 resi dents this would make a total of 20 of the resi dents there receiving assi stance its unbelievable in 1965 i also wrote a letter to a mr spooner the minister of municipal affairs at the time and i told him that a disaster area existed in this town ship i later received a reply stating that the local council of the municipal ity was quite capable of looking after the situation now nearly five years later we have finally brought this mess into the open it also stated in this article that the lady coun cillor in question would make a house to house in vestigation on those on welfare in my opinion i dont think that survey would matter much be cause you would only be hitting the dead beats the underpaid those out of work and those too old to work in fact my point of view would be to take a survey of all the people living right across the township to find out the problems do you think it fair to investigate only those on welfare its only a very small per centage of the people after all we all do pay a portion of our taxes in helping to keep those poor souls with food shel ter and clothing i have resided in this township for the past fif teen years and i have met most of the people once or twice i know that they are not all millionaires just average joes like myself existing from day today on the little remuneration that they make at work hoping that they can earn enough to pay the years taxes yes i think that this welfare mess should be in vestigated but not by our local municipality but by the proper authorities from queens park signed patrick cashman reject amalgamation of health units ontario county despite a lengthy explan ation by health minister matthew dymond on the benefits that would be gained by the county ent ering a district health unit with oshawa and york county ontario county council has decid ed to make one more bid to form a health district with oshawa by a recorded vote of 20 to 15 with three mem bers absent council again decided to approach the minister on setting up a unit comprising the county and oshawa reeve williams of pick ering township said the minister had not mention ed whether- such a setup would be approved by the province we are not asking for a change in legislation i feel a unit comprising york county ontario county and oshawa would be too big i cannot see any reason why he would not reexamine the situa tion he said warden ross murison pickering village said he felt dr dymond had said the county and oshawa would not make a district said reeve henry polak of ajax dr dymond said legislation has been pass ed i see this motion only as a delaying action how do we know oshawa wants to come in with us this question could have been asked before this decision is going to cost this county 9000 a month dr dymond said there would be no coercion or compulsion he also said his department was pre pared to be flexible lets see how flexible they can be deputy reeve robert attersley of whitby said dr dymond addressed the session for almost an hour hamlet study report pickering twp all residents within the hamlets of brougham greenwood green river whitevale claremont al- tona brock road and cherrywood are invited to attend a regular meet ing of the pickering town ship planning board thursday may 16 information gained from the recently conclud ed hamlet studv through mitchell allan coop er ernie davis clare kee- vil and gordon young others who may be inter ested are invited to get in touch with any member of the group similar committees are in the procress of forma tion through the constitu ency dear sir has our christianity de teriorated to the place where we accept or reject respect or criticize our pastor like a hockey play er are we so selfsatisfied so selfindulgent that we as good christians feel we can measure a mans worth and sincerety as a minister of gods word what infallible guage do some think they possess that can analize any mans worth of course there have always been those who have felt themselves so endowed as christs life and death on calvary can testify promotional campaigns for any new product or personality are very com mon today in the purely commercial entertain ment and political fields for example even three year olds know the thumbs up gesture of the beer barons more recently we have witnessed in the political field how thousands of dollars are spent to create a popular public image have we become so de based in our affluent soc iety that a man of god has to sell himself his image to his congregation before they will accept the word of god he teaches and the active christian life he practices a man who is ordained into the ministry conse crates his life to promote gods word he does this after hard years of acade mic training he accepts as much as 50 less in fin ancial remuneration than lie could command in the purely secular academic world as a high school teacher for example his work week is not 9 am to 5 pm for a five day week his holiday not two mon ths the most humiliating part of all is the minis ter and even his family are placed under the critical microscope of public opin ion the criticism pointed at him is rarely weighed in the light of full know ledge of all the circum stances i wonder if any man should be judged or erit- ized by less than his peers i mean a peer in the sense of christian dedication my fellow christians perhaps we should reread st luke chapter 6 verse 41 and why beholdest thou the mote that is in the brothers eye but per- ceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye before we as a congre gation of christians can ask any man of god to minister to us we must re examine our own christ ianity are we spectator trailer display the display of mobile campers and trailers on the lot adjacent to the cnr tracks main street west has attracted much interest these units have become popular within re cent years particularly with vacationers with fam ilies the stouffville agent is albert hudson baker avenue christians paying little more than lip service to the word of god are we just sitting on the sidelines or even just in the com fort of our homes scrutin izing our minister with a somewhat cynical eye like a drama critic might an actor in a shakespearian play its true a bad actor can turn even shakepeare into a farce but can any man regardless of your personal feelings toward him ever turn your chris tianity into a farce no but you can therefore let- he who is without sin cast the first stone d w brodie congregation member stouffville united church it
