well ington street west where the alleged attack occurr ed feb 12 the case is continuing mrs cardwell an at tractive brunette told of returning from work to the hamill home at about 430 pm she said that mr hamill came in but later left again to do some shopping at the plaza she said she was having her supper when he returned she described how he made several trips to the basement for liquor and after accepting one she said she didnt want any more she told of pouring six drinks down the sink mrs cardwell testified that mr hamill made ad vances towards her and she ordered him to stop she said that he became very angry when he dis covered she had been emp tying out the drinks and threatened to cut her throat she said she wash ed her hair in the kitchen sink and went to the bath room to do it up she told the court that there was no lock on the bathroom door and a short while later he entered and be gan to squeeze me she said she was very fright ened mrs cardwell said that on the pretense of calling her children she phoned an employee at a markham factory and asked him to come and get her she tes tified that mr hamill put his arm around her throat grabed the receiver and hung it up he began to paw me in fact he was all over me i felt sick she said she testified that the accused had consumed a considerable amount of liquir and was unsteady on his feet she said that she went upstairs and began to pack her suitcase when the phone rang she said that mr hamill snatched the receiver out of her hand but later allowed her to talk on returning to her room she said she fell on the stairs and hurt her hip later she described how they both were seated on the chesterfield and mr hamill again made ad vances she said he refus ed to stop in spite of her protests she said she at tempted to struggle free but he held her she said she was terrified she des cribed how her employer and a friend arrived at the hamill house and drove her to the markham vill age police office mrs cardwell testified that in the week following the alleged attack mr hamill had called her and threatened to kill her if she refused to drop the charges donald hindson solici tor for the accused ques tioned the complainant at length while on the stand mrs cardwell admitted that she had been twice married and had children by her first husband she said she was now separat ed from her second hus band and the children were with their father prior to moving into the hamill house mrs card- well said she had lived for a week into stouffville but did not like it there its a god forsaken hole and besides it was too far from my family she said she said she learned of the vacancy in markham through an advertisement in a newspaper she said that mr hamill told her that he lived alone in the house but was away much of the time in crossquestioning the plaintiff further she ad mitted that she also had a baby by her second hus band but had put it up for adoption mrs cardwell denied that she was ordered to leave the home she occu pied in stouffville she said she left on her own accord she admitted however that on one occa sion a doctor was called when her temperature supposedly had reached 109 degrees she said she had put the thermometer under an electric blanket i just wanted someone to talk to at least a doctor keeps what you say to himself she said mrs cardwell denied that she had expressed any fear of becoming preg nant because she had been taking birth control pills for four years mrs cardwell said that she had signed a com plaint against mr hamill with the justice of the peace but had been ad vised by the chief of pol ice to reconsider she said that chief white feared that mr hamill might lose his job as a school bus driver and furthermore that she would be pulled
