village in favor were reeve al ma walker and deputy- reeve albert l a i d 1 a w iloyd abernethy doug las allison and rod ste wart reeve walker allowed each member to express his views on the subject but warned that she would cut off debate if the dis cussion showed signs of getting out of hand councillor stewart said he couldnt see how an election by wards would be an improvement over the present system he suggested that it might be difficult to obtain candi dates in some areas with out pulling them out of the woodwork councillor allison said he had discussed the issue with many people in the village but none had come up with a solid argument in favor of division by wards i think myself that general vote is best he said councillor lloyd aber nethy who took a similar stand previously refused to alter his thinking our village is not yet built up to its limit perhaps in five years time we could be ready for wards at pres ent i favor a general vote reeve walker argued that division by wards was the wish of the people she contended too that she was sure that very responsible people could be found in all areas to sit on council she said that a petition in favor of wards should carry some weight i have talked to many people about it in the last five years and all are for it councillor stewart ar gued that the petition in question represented only vh percent of the elector ate and could hardly be considered as the opinion of the entire village deputy reeve albert laidlaw said he had weigh ed all points as presented by both sides and had come to the conclusion that the ward system would be best a motion introduced by councillor allison and sup ported by councillor aber nethy that the council be elected by a general vote and consist of a mayor reeve deputyreeve and
