iation award of merit presented annually by the globe and mail robert nielsen 30 told a convention gathering at the royal york hotel how he introduced sgt pepper to his class at sir sandford community college peter borough by playing a beatle album to capture the interest of his stu dents the entry from mr nielsen was judged best of 180 received from teach ers across the province he was presented with a trophy a pair of bookends and a cheque for 500 it was purely an acci dent in the beginning mr nielsen said my wife bought the beatles album and after listening to it i realized that the rock n roll singers were not just making noises there was a message there mr nielsen believes that apathy is the disease that afflicts most young people and as he was starting in a new commun ity college he was anxious to start with a bang among his students were prospective engineers who were more concerned with their own field than with theme and metres and poetic diction 1 distributed a sheet containing two poems and we began a traditional straightforward analysis mr neilsen wrote in his award winning outline afterwards i said now well listen to the poets reading their own works then i played the record and studied facial reactions some grinned widely many looked trap ped after all they had just finished moaning and groaning over the literary efforts of the chief arbit ers of their own genera tion the almighty beatles mr nielsen introduced the beatles a part of what he called the home life into the classroom where the students realized that although they had heard the songs many times they had never really lis tened they began the study feeling that the beatles were four boys who made keen noises to dance to mr nielsen said they ended with a realization that the beatles are cap able of making a valuable contribution to the cult ural fabric of our society we were dealing with something in the class room that the world out side deemed worthy of considerable attention mr nielsen achieved a rapport with his class that otherwise might not have been achieved the stu dents gave as well as re ceived and the overall result was stimulating and exciting for teacher and pupils the beatles were not content to coast along after making a lot of money mr nielsen said the solutions they offer to the worlds social ills are rooted in the religious and philosophical views of the hindu mystics i didnt know how my method would turn out but the re- soult was most gratifying mr nielsen a teacher for 10 of his 30 years be lieves that most of the old values have been shot down that young people no longer respect status and will give respect only to those who earn it when i decided to en ter an outline i didnt realize how difficult it would be to put my thoughts into words mr nielsen said i nearly gave up a few times i ad mire the judges for the liberality of their views in not discarding my sub mission as being in the far out category color guard pageant stouffville the
