the facilities now offered mr redshaw said that du ties required of the reeve required considerable time and he was willing to give his time in the in terest of the ratepayers mr young although a comparative newcomer to the township said he had a genuine interest in his community and the mun icipality he said he felt the electorate should have a choice of candidates for the reeves office he charged that tor onto was bursting at the seams and the influx of new residents to the town ship required closer co operation between these people and persons who had lived in the area for many years we must draw up a blueprint for the future and not attempt to lock the door after the horse has bolted the barn he pinpointed gra vel pits roads taxes and transportation as prob lems that should be seeking reelection to the position of deputyreeve he is being opposed by a senior councillor charles for- sythe wellknown town ship farmer at lot 30 cone 6 mr nesbitt said that discussions with ratepay ers usually brings up the question of improved ser vices high on the agenda is the request for a mun icipal police force to re place the service presently provided by the opp from whitby he said that to provide roundtheclock protec tion the township would need five fulltime officers at a minimum starting sal ary of 5000 per man he said that one or more cruisers would be requir ed along with an office and a secretary he noted that in uxbridge one mill on the tax rate would raise 5000 he left it up to the electorate to decide for themselves the in crease that could be ex pected he said he was not aware of any govern ment grant that would pay a portion of the expense he said that municipal garbage collection was an other service requested by some ratepayers he noted that if it was to be town ship wide it would mean pickup over a route of 200 miles and the cost would be exhorbitant he charged that the council had often reduced its own budget estimates particularly on roads to allow for increase in edu cation costs if our road rate had gone up in pro portion to schools most would be ready for pav ing he said touching again on education he predicted that the cost un der the new robarts plan would be considerably higher than under the present system as a member of the me tro and region conserva tion authority he spoke with pride of accomplish ments within recent years including the completion of areas at bruces mill claremont and greenwood that attracted over one million persons in 1967 councillor forsythe said that several pieces of new equipment had been pur member for the past five years was chairman of the welfare committee in 196667 he said that wel fare recipients had been kept to a minimum of about 12 during the win ter months and 8 in the summer councillor drewery dwelt mainly with the in flux of urban residents in to the rural area and the displacement of agricul ture as the townships prime industry he warn ed that with increased population comes the de mand for more services and the need for tighter controls he agreed that uxbridge required an offi cial plan and zoning by- laws he noted however that to enforce such rules and regulations would re quire a bylaw enforce ment officer mr drewery said that the per capita debt in ux bridge township was the lowest in the entire cen tral ontario region zoning overdue frank hendy in his first bid for a council seat outlined his many inter ests both past and pres ent he was critical of the townships slow to action progress toward a zoning bylaw which he said was now underway but should have been imple mented six years ago he charged that 10 acre lots were a detriment to both the owner and the town ship as a whole he rec ommended that the plan ning board assume full control over residential buildup and restrict it mainly to areas where houses were now located and some services could be provided he said that many good farms in ux bridge had been virtually ruined by spot residential development mr hendy lives on cone 5 clark muirhead an ad mitted opponent of gravel interests in the township charged that the munici pality was being destroy ed by an industry whose detrimental effects far out weighed any benefit gain ed through taxtation he described their tax contri butions as negligible no decent future is guaran teed here if this situation is allawed to continue un controlled he said he said that a more realistic planning program for the township was required i would like to see the township developed for the use of all people now living here and not
