well- known highly regarded senior staff member of markham area office has joined ontario hydros ex clusive forty year club he is john alexander bayes 59 assistant man ager of markham area when john bayes join ed ontario hydros staff in october 1927 he start ed in line construction in the former bond lake rural power district with headquarters at richmond hill he worked for sup erintendent dune cham- ney who later became per sonnel officer for central region serving for many years until his recent re tirement john progressed stead ily toward his present po sition as assistant area manager at markham he has seen a great many changes take place in line construction work since 1927 the principal change is in improved transporta tion and roads he points out that crews today have much better vehicles which are able to get around faster because of improved roads this en ables crews to get work done in almost half the time that it required in the late 1920s and early 30s after working for a win ter in bond lake rural power district john bayes was transferred to the newly formed mark ham rpd in 1928 serv ing under supt j c burns and doing line con struction work during the years 193035 john bayes did general office work and meter reading also helping with outside line construction and main tenance work for a nine- year period starting in 1935 he was driving a ser vice truck and doing gen eral line maintenance work in 1944 he was pro moted to foreman and three years later was made an assistant to the area manager then in 1958 he was promoted to his present position as assistant area manager over the years that he was employed on outside work the only mishap that john bayes experi enced was two unfortu nate encounters with dogs he was bitten twice on the calf of the leg during the time he was a meter reader mr bayes 4 recalls the early winter of 1943 when a devastating ice storm crippled the power service in the williamsburg sec tor below winchester in eastern region he was among the hydro line members who were rush ed from various parts of the province to repair the storm damage the task took almost a month to complete following world war ii rural line construction work was accelerated greatly much of the time john bayes was helping to instruct new linemen because the line crews were increased to cope with the expanding line construction work never- the less it was quite a remarkable period be cause even with the large number of new men on the staff the crews were able to work safely with out mishaps or injuries one condition john bayes points out is quite different today comdared with 40 years ago when he joined the commission this is the close contact th the customers in those early days the hydro workers knew most of their customers by name and the customers usually knew the area staff members if he were able to start over again john bayes maintains he would be glad to do area line con struction work because he was very happy in this field it was never a mon otonous type of work john maintains there is plenty of diversification in the tasks that area line men and other outside workers are required to do throughout the years john has enjoyed a warm friendship with the area staff members both the inside and outside groups and there has been an ex cellent esprit de corps mr bayes is married and he and his wife have three sons and a daugh ter one of the sons is an ontario hydro employee working at the npd plant near rolphton john and his wife are now grandparents and have five grandchildren john bayes hopes to complete present charlie and nell boss have a tiny ital ian girl who was badly undernourished and con siderably mistreated be fore she arrived at their home she knew no en glish at all by striving to communicate mainly through their own little daughter mr and mrs boss have now been able to get through to this young girl she now un derstands what they want her to do and is adjusting very well charlie boss and his wife have four of their own children and two from the childrens aid society those neighbors and friends who know what charlie boss and his wife are doing have many fine things to say about the way they arc helping young children in great need indeed friends are proud of this dutchcan adian couple who have done so much important service work in their ad opted country possibly highlands golf and country club mr macdonald assured his listeners that he was pleased to pinchhit for cleanup time is here mr nixon he said that rather than go south he had to be satisfied with a twoweek holiday at his summer cottage community ownership mr macdonald pointed to current land values in york county and suggest ed that the only feasible control was through com munity ownership he said that the federal govern ment will shortly present a proposal recommending that municipalities pur chase vast areas of land with the aim of cutting down on speculation he observed however that such a move would not curb inflationary land prices in builtup areas he suggested that the government should ac quire properties in both urban and rural districts and sell them at as close to the original cost price as possible he accused the province of buying lots in bramalea for 6800 and selling them for over 9000 he urged real estate firms to do their part to halt land price inflation mr macdonald was thanked by thomas shea of markham remove the tops of any diseased plants from the flower beds this fall state horticulturists with the ontario department of agriculture and food this helps to control a number of fungi that cause disease of garden flowers if powdery mildew has been a problem on peren nial phlox delphinium zinnias and other plants cut off and remove the tops this will help reduce the number of mildew spores that will survive the winter peonies may be treated the same way to reduce botrytis fungus cut the tops just above the ground and bury them before frost clumps of iris should have all dead leaves re moved and if other leaves show spots caused by iris leaf spot fungus clip back foliage and remove the diseased tips cut hollyhock tips as soon as bloom is finished then spray overwintering plants thoroughly with a zineb fungicide if any lea ves are infected with rust remember this treatment will not give complete control as spores may be blown from
