the whitchurch conser vation club or someone has replied to my letter of aug 30 1967 in the stouffville tribune by sending me betty ross a mimeographed report dealing with my frustra tion and confusion their words and a recital of the clubs functions and achievements there was no covering letter nor is it signed other than the mimeo graphed names of a bec ker president and h hill ary secretary at the end of the report frustrated 1 am con fused 1 am not the author of the report a becker 1 imagine thinks 1 have been a summer resideat of musselmans for only eight years our property and cottage very modest have been in our family for over 40 years 1 knew what is now valley road when it was an unbroken mead ow the long grass blowing in waves of green before the late john windsor would cut it when through the trees wind sor lake was a delicious spot of blue that dis appeared and extended it self into a rushy pond teeming with life a stones throw from the bottom of our hill steep then white with daisies and bladder campion before we plant ed our trees mr becker doesnt understand how i could have confused the whit church conservation club with the metropolitan tor onto and region conserva tion authority and the holland valley conserva tion authority i didnt not for a moment i have already written to both authorities as well as the water resources commis sion the minister of mun icipal affairs york coun ty health unit to mention a few recipients mtrca told me musselmans was not under their jurisdic tion the holland valley conservation authority said the situation was like ly beyond their jurisdic tion and promised to in vestigate and report that was on august 10th 1966 i havent heard a word since the york county unit has never answered my letter with regard to conditions at a certain cottage even though i en closed a stamped self- addressed envelope mr becker says my statement conservation in whitchurch is 30 years late is an understate ment he continues the foundations for undesir able housing development in part of the lake wilcox area and in at least two other areas in whitchurch township were laid more than half a century ago when there was no provin cial or municipal legisla tion to prevent it i agree i agree but what has whitchurch done in the last 50 years it didnt take them that long to assess what was happen ing if a feeble attempt at conservation had been be gun in the named areas 30 years ago 20 years ago the line might have been held and at musselmans dedicated drive now by conservationists or any level of government could save it from becoming a slum you say you have exist ed as a voluntary club for 20 years that you have no authority or money to deal with matters of expropri ation no more have i but you could at one time or another in the last 20 years have lifted your voice above a whisper to protest at what has and is happening at wilcox and musselmans i have been writing letters to the papers for years about it i never heard from you or of you dont you feel a sort of municipal shame that wilcox and mussel mans rapidly becoming another wilcox both exist in whitchurch adjacent to a city whose population and recreational needs burgeon enormously every year have you visited the affected parts of mussel mans lately do you know that the township council the building inspector the first operation stouffville twelve year old maurice halstcd son of mr and mrs mau rice halstcd stouffville became somewhat of a celebrity last week he underwent the first opera tion in scarboros new centenary hospital on ellcsmcre avenue he is now home but his leg will be confined to a cast for several weeks dr d j petrie assisted dontacruketmecia and inquire asouths rawity orhim y7 mayb voutf bylaw or the old bylaw governing the use of cottages that the offic ial plan for the area around musselmans drawn by proctor and red- fern and paid for by the township is never used nor referred to in a conversa tion on july 25th 1966 t kerr the township clerk told me he wished mussel mans would dry up i can prove these statements let me show you then mr becker you say unfortunately the people who clamour for more activity in conserva tion are the ones who bellyache and beef loudly when asked to pay even 25 of the cost through their municipal tax bills i cant speak for all but are you saying that any responsible cottager would prefer to pay for schools welfare roads which they dont need rather than for conservation try us i am glad whitchurch conservation club has saved some poor animals from the guns of illegal hunters glad that there is a whitchurch conserva tion area i commend your other good works but you are fiddling while rome burns conservation ought to begin where its most needed are you interest ed sincerely betty ross 8 saxony crescent weston ont shoe srifi will be back she bought the first pair showep her she s reached that age where she has to learn to walk all over
