on the grounds saturday the occasion was the official opening of the school as a community centre donated to the section by mrarthur latcham of slouffville two year old lisa mctaggart daughter of mr nancy attended a family reunion picnic in honor of their niece mrs clifford ross of vancouver island whom ihey had not seen for 12 years the picnic was held by the lake at the home of mr and mrs herb white of pine orchard and along with mr and mrs ross and their family other relatives at the picnic were mr and mrs armand eng lish and richard of stouff- ville mr and mrs walter johnston and earl and bernard alndons colossus who placed fourth in open at the st bernard national specialty show at the santa barbara kennel club recent visitors at the home of mr and mrs robert hockley were mrs hockleys aunt mrs ina woodburn of toronto and mr and mrs al halatuck also of toronto pickering three grade 13 graduates of pickering district high school and one from both ajax and dunbarton high schools have been design ated ontario scholars each achieved 80 per cent or over on seven cre dits they arc joy green of claremont laurel bird of brojrham and susan craig of pickering all stu dents of pickering district high school from dun- barton the honor has gone to colleen bccgan of pick ering and at ajax it is margaret peggy morris of ajax joy green daughter of mr and mrs h t green of claremont topped commented mr arthur latcham of slouff ville who with his wife were the guests of honor at the official opening of the mt zion community cen tre saturday afternoon mr ralph jones the com mittee chairman presented mr lalcham with an en graved picture and in re turn received the deed to the former school building mrs lome jones present ed mrs latcham with a corsage and a small person al gift it was mr lalcham who purchased the school from the pickering township area board to be used by the community as a centre for all their activities mr reg hoskins in ex pressing the residents gratitude said that while most people are only in terested in themselves there are those who also take an interest in the well- being of others we can all lake a lesson from those who find pleasure in doing something for some one else this is a wonder ful gesture mr hoskins reminded his listeners that in spite of the benefits of improved educational ser vices something had been lost with the closing of the little red schoolhouse but thanks to mr latcham our school will remain for our own use other platform guests included pickering town ship deputy reeve mrs jean mcpherson ward 2 councillor donald beer and area board vice chair man charles mctaggart the community centre was officially opened by mrs mcpherson and mr latcham as they unveiled a recently erected plaque on the front of the build ing the afternoon activities included mainly the renew ing of acquaintances be tween old friends teachers and classmates the inter ior of the community cen tre was filled with family keepsakes many dating back more than 100 years over 400 present more than 400 persons signed hie guest book dur ing the afternoon and eve ning the outdoor program at night revealed the talent in the community as mrs betty pegg took charge of an oldfashioned singsong other participants included gail disney beth hoar gloria jones gordon tab- er christine evans holley allbright mrs dorothy jones ron mason richard day and mrs edgar ward of clare mont the teacher who taught the longest term 7 years to mrs eileen car- son thompson the pupil travelling the farthest dis- ance ottawa the oldest living teacher but unable to be present is mrs priscilla jones 96 of port credit a letter of congratulations was receiv ed from mrs ada holtby moffat age 90 of brandon manitoba the oldest pupil heard from was mrs greta hodgson
