chief parker claims should police all pickering r aerial trapeze act thrills crowd thf trilune nrxr ah v rw pickering picker ing township police chief reginald parker feels that the jurisdiction of his de partment should extend over the entire municipal ity instead of north only to the third concession at the present time the pick- ring force patrols the ur ban area while the ontario provincial police covers the more rural districts chief parker was critical of pickering council for cutting the 1967 police budget thus eliminating three additional members to the force the budget for the po lice force was the subject jt discussions at about five police commission sittings and was altered by council at a single sitting said chief parker i am well aware of the fact that taxes are contin- uing to rise in the town ship however it is my be lief that the taxpayers of this township are not wil ling to accept less than ad- quate police protection chief parker pointed out that the mill rate for po- lice purposes in the south end of the township was 69 mills or 3450 on a home assessed at 5000 i may be biased in fa vor of the department hut 1 do not believe that this is too much money to pay for police service when compared to any other sin gle thing if a municipality is to he relatively peaceful and law abiding the only way this can be accomplished is by adequate and vigor ous police patrol stated chief parker statistics show that while the township has 105 po lice per 1000 whitby has 131 and oshawa 129 chief parker pointed out that the present staff of his department is 28 per sons of whom six are pri- i marily doing office work leaving 22 persons lo po- j lice the municipality seven j days a week 24 hours a day with a population of 24000 it means each offi cer has over 7000 persons under his particular care during his tour of duty and this figure does not in clude the transient popu lation commented chief parker township vulnerable in my estimation we are extremely vulnerable to problems with large in dustrial strikes or major accident occurrences of any nature the average shift strength of three men on the road at any given moment is just not ade quate the addition of three more officers will improve the situation a little but certainly will not put us in a position where we can feel that we have extra strength said the town ship police chief chief parker admitted that there had beer occa sions in the past when not a single police cruiser was patrolling the township he said often in bad acci dent cases his department was presently unable to carry on normal patrolling of the remainder of the township the whole operation is just doing its job and it is unfortunate that the force is only capable of margin ally patrolling areas like shopping plazas mr par ser said that from a traffic standpoint his department was not doing a good en ough job chief parker said he ho ped a new police building would be constructed this year on a 33 acre site ac ross highway 2 from the present dunbarton loca tion he said the cost of a new police headquarters was estimated at 125000 the present police sta tion was built in 1954 at a cost of 18000 and includ es two police cells while according to chief parker at least six are needed expo 67 expects to pro fit greatly from licensing its emblem which now ap pears on hundreds of items from buttons to air
