and a history- familiar things heretofore over looked are now objects of local and historic interest in the corner store clare mont has what has been described by a student of architecture as one of the finest examples of 19th century achitecture it has many outstanding features one of which is the granite trim on its windows and doors which is most un usual mrs cliff reynolds in her recent talk before the womens institute out lined a bit of the history ol this unique building it was built on a lot pur chased july 14 1851 for l12 10s by john michell who gave the village its name twentyfour years later on july 5 1875 it was purchased by two brothers john and duncan macnab who had arrived from scotland in the 1850s for many years it was known as the macnab store in those days all wares were brought from toronto by team and sleigh butter eggs lard tallow lumber shingles maple sugar axe handles and candles were trans ported by farmers to the city market and brought back to the store eggs were packed in oat hulls and straw to prevent breakage and as much as 7 tons of butter would be handled during a season from spring to fall in 1899 when the mac nab brothers retired the business was transferred to williams son peter sr and johns two sons peter jr and charles peter sr finally bought out his cou sins and for some time con ducted the business him self the store has changed hands many times since the days of the mac- nabs among its owners have been reuben besse and david scott who oper ated it jointly and david scott who carried on alone other names connected with the store were wilkin son mitchell lewis bur- trum and galloway ernie baker fred mowder and robert madill also ran the business at different times it present owner is jim curtis whose grocery and meat business ontario county junior farmers are to be congra tulated on a most success ful festival late ross middleton born at goodwood claremont on thursday march 9 mr ross middleton of clare mont passed away in the scarboro general hospital in his 66th year born at goodwood the son of the late joseph middleton he became wellknown over the the years as a mechan ic employee at the clare mont garage he was forc
