junior section and winner of the russell mor rison trophv was grant mustard uxbridge rr 2 farming report by al wall the view out over farms at night for the past week has been a thrilling sight the shiny crust of ice glis tening in bright moonlight iiihius a farts piciure gi fields all polished up in their sunday best it looks good but its a little worrying too there are thousands of acres of forage and wheat plants that have to stay alive un derneath that ice air is needed for survival and the threat of smothering is real its just a guess as in how the ice crust may af fect these plants hut a cou ple of ideas on plant survi val may help first some insulation helps a plant to stay alive snow is a fairly gonri insulator hut ice is a pnnr one fnrtunately we now have a good layer of snow under the ice to pro vide insulation a second point is that there arc gases being re leased from decomposition of plant material even in the winter these gases are poisonous to the plant and if they are sealed in by ice plants will die this is howplants are smothered in the winter again i think the good snow layer we have now will be a life saver there will be room for the gases to move into the snow and as long as the ice gets tha wed off fairly soon there should be no problem its my guess that there has been nn serious win terkilling yet generally winterkill is much more likely to happen in late march and april than it is in january or february i know its early to be thinking of crops but this is a good time to order seed and fertilizer from dealers new forage varie ties and the best corn hy brids are often sold out quite early our bulletin on field crops for 1967 is out now it is excellent full of upto date suggestions on all crops and a phone call or post card to our office in
