ten days before christmas marred the holidays for mr and mrs john paton a cut in the little finger of his left hand became in fected and mr paton had to have the finger amputat ed mr paton is home at moving back to toronto mr and mrs robert barton spent new years weekend with mrs bar tons brother and sister-in- law mr and mrs charles smith of weston christ mas guests at the barton home were mr and mrs smith mr and mrs rob ert barton jr of scarho- ro miss alice maclennan of toronto and mr and mrs peter lippert of madoc mr and mrs eldon cresswell of oshawa mr and mrs graydon cress well and mr and mrs ronald smith of toronto had dinner with their par ents rev and mrs cress well tuesday mr and mrs donald kelcey of st catharines spent christmas weekend with miss aileen adams operates farm at age 82 brougham mrs ed ith soden was born on a farm a mile north of clare mont station 82 years ago today she has a herd of 35 beef cattle on 135 acres on- the fifth concession of pickering mrs soden op erates her farm wilh just the help of a neighbour john white and his son paul to do the heavy work mr white and paul har vested the hay 9000 bales this year and do the winter feeding its my job to look after them during the summer says mrs soden mrs soden also has a mixed flock of bantams chickens ducks and geese numbering 75 lo so but they are kept mostly as a hobby the eggs are laid helterskelter and those that afent broken are gi ven away the variety ran ges from bantams to mal lard ducks to three canada geese from her husbands death in 1945 until 1955 mrs soden had the help of a hired hand but since then has depended on the help of her friends because she is alone she has had to change her style of farm ing at one time she kept horses and pigs but had lo give them up because they involved loo much work people oflen ask her if she gets lonesome but she says i have a tv and a telephone and lots of things to do i have friends i dont believe in so many friends just a few friends thats all you need mrs soden slays on the farm because its nice here i like nature the ani mals the birds the trees the creek until five years ago the farm totalled 307 acres but only 135 acres remains however she is determin ed not to sell the land the creek flows through in the early days of pickering township it was known as spring creek the first brougham post office was located on mrs sodcns land and she has erected a cairn on the site lincolnvilie house derstroyed by fire the home of mrs shirley warriner lincolnvilie was destroyed in a prechristmas fire dec 23 brigades from both stouffville and uxbridge attended the hlaze that completely burned out the interior of the residence fireman lloyd jennings is pictured on the roof of the house as flames are brought under con trol staff photo mrs edith soden of brougham operates her own farm al age 2 staff photo and miss anne wanstall at their home on the brock road rev h s hillyer offici ated at a communion serv ice of judication for church work for 1967 following the regular 11 am service on new years morning with dr and mrs hillyer for christmas were their sons and their families dr and mrs john hillvcr david and new years weekend at the symes home mr and mrs don hed ges and rosemary had christmas dinner at the spruce villa at new years their guests for dinner were mr and mrs don hedges and miss mary neil of oshawa visitors at the home of mr and mrs jake taylor the day after new years were mr and mrs george smith of north clare mont mr harold hopkins president of the branch welcomed the 140 guests who attended the new years eve dance given by the canadian legion in the new legion hall dancing was enjoyed to the music of reg reed and his or chestra a scrveyoursclf supper was provided by the ladies auxiliary there were three door prizes and five lucky draws of 50 each the lat- icr were won by mr bob smith of oshawa mr har ry porter claremont mrs k thompson markham mr jack beach stouffville and mr ken ramsey of brougham guests of mr and mrs roy timms and family for- the new years weekend were mr timms twin brother mr bob timms and his family of holland landing ricky timms spent christmas week at the home of his grandpar ents mr and mrs joseph maltby of malton the regular meeting of the ladies auxiliary of the cubs and scouts for thursday was cancelled the next meeting will he held february 2 at the home of mrs roy timms the evening unit of the ucw will meet at the home of mrs frank hol- lingshcad monday jan 9 at s pm mrs david wat son and mrs earl pilkey are on the committee the roll call is suggestions for activities for the new year hospital extension fund aided by contributions uxbridge the board of trustees of the cottage hospital uxbridge gratefully acknowledge contributions recently re ceived towards the exten sion fund of the hospital i many people who have pledged donations to the hospital have made their gifts just at the christmas- season the womens hospital auxiliary at the board of directors meeting dec 17 presented a cheque in the amount of 2000 to mr peter williamson chair man of the board as part of a 15000 pledge which the hospital auxiliary has made the receipt of the cheque in the amount of 2000 puts the amount of monies so far raised by the womens hospital auxili ary to 12000 a cheque in the amount of 500 was al so presented to mr wil liamson this cheque was from the profits of the gift shop run in the hospital by the womens auxiliary a cheque was recently presented to the hospital in the amount of 400 from the womens auxili ary of the united church at glen major again it was noted by the chair man of the board that the work of these respective auxiliaries are of wonder fully great assistance to the hospital a cheque was received just a few days before christmas from mr a j wood of woods lumber uxbridge in the- amount of 1000 as a contribution lo the hospital extension fund the childrens ward at the hospilal was decorated with a christmas tree pre pared by the brownies of uxbridgc a christmas carol sing song was presented to the patients at the hospital by the guides and brownies of uxbridgc the evening of dec 20 saw 62 of these voung ladies at the hospi tal construction work on the new extensions and renovations lo the hospi lal is on schedule and all new services and facilities will be computed exclusive of basement garage unfinished attic porches or verandahs within the outside walls b no person shall use any land for the purpose of erecting or moving thereto any accessory hitild- ing before first obtaining a hiiilding permit for a dwelling house or summer collage 2 that clause 11 he repealed and substitute therefore he following a no person shall use any land for the purpose of erecting moving to or altering any dwelling house or summer cottage unless the parcel of land has a frontage and an average width measured at right angles to the side boundaries of not less than one hundred feel hooi on a provincial county or municipal road and an area of not less than fifteen thousand square feet 15000 b provided that if the aica is greater than fifteen thousand square fret 15000 the frontage on a provincial county or municipal road shall not be less than one quarter of the depth c provided thai ny lot held under separate own ership upon the day this by law is passed which does not havethe frontage and area as required by this bylaw for the erection of a dwelling house thereon may be used for the erection of a dwelling house thereon provided that all other
