department police department and ambulances to be emergency services websters dictionary defines emergency as a sudden generally unexpected occur rence or set of circumstances demanding immediate action when someone phones the fire department and tells them their house is burning they dont send a fireman to the scene and then when he confirms the fire send the fire truck yet this is similar to what happens when there is an automobile accident recently we come to a serious accident east of cop- pins corners two of the victims were lying injured on the road and another two trapped in a car the acci dent was reported immed iately over 20 minutes later two members of our emer gency service the opp arrived the reason for ihi- long delay is because they have to come all the way from whitby or brechin to the uxbridge district mun icipal officers from nearby towns have no authority to co iie they radioed for another emergency service the ambulance which took over ten minutes to come con sider the poor accident vic tims all this time some ly ing on the cold pavement and the day was a miserable day it could have happened in the winter time say in 10 degree weather and five inches of snow still they must lie some crumpled over in the car seat all bleeding and in severe pain no one can assist these people until they are in a hospital when the ambulance fin ally does arrive at the scene it takes at least another 10 minutes to get them to the hospital that makes a total of close to 45 minutes before any treatment is given i shudder to think of the precious lives that are lost because it is too late to help them when they get to the hospital why cant an ambulance and a policeman be dis patched immediately upon request surely the archaic law that does not give mun icipal officers authority out of their town should be changed either that or uxbridge should have an opp station it is ridicu- rs i howard served on south shore assoc son of mr and mrs frank carson and miss teachers lloyd johnston administrator jisstbt memo from a car dealer how to lose money w on a bargain avo during the recent winter cold spell a dealer friend of mine lost a new car sale to a young couple who bought out of town at a saving of what actually amounted to s 1500 the dealer tlinuulit no more about it until a few days later when the husband called to say that their new car wouldnt start and apparently bad something seriously wrong with it an examination revealed the engine block was cracked from lack of adequate anti freeze in the radiator how had it happened the sellins dealer in a citv some 40 miles away denied all responsibility and claimed the antifreeze had been checked and that the defect was not his responsibility the most satisfaction the couple received was an offer to weld the block if you will bring the car over here they decided that adding a 40mile towing charge to what they would have to end up paying for a new engine block installation was throwing good money after bad while this particular type of rouble may not he commonplace similar cases of other preservlce neglect unfortunately are it was plainly evident that the dealer with the bargain price was cutting costs in simply not installing any or sufficient antifreeze in his ears or neglecting to check them thoroughly who is to blame well the dealer who sold the ear primarily but what about the young couple who were prepared to deal anywhere for the lowest bid there is some point to the argument that they really got what tliev paid for i lloyd james pres markhain chrysler qodp no 7 hwy
