absence because of surgery a comedy that wasnt comical stoitfvile for two nights last week the stouff ville players presented their 3act comedy the torch- bearers to an audience of about 400 in the legion hall to comment on the perform ance of the cast the tri bune acquired the services of critic geoffrey p gluck- stein who attended the init ial presentation on thurs day evening he reports as follows if slapsiick comedy of old vaudeville style is what you like then the torchbear- ers was a tremendous suc cess if it is not then the stouffville players most recent effort was a zm hour comedy that was not com ical the story was centred around an amateur theatri cal group working under harrowing circumstances mrs paul ritter mary harris becomes involved in the performance when mrs clara sheppard teresa foulds loses her husband when mrs ritter fumbles and bumbles her part her husband frank barker tells her in no uncertain terms that she has laid a proverbial egg however other members of the cast feel that she is an overnight star and encourage her to carry on with her new found career that in a nutshell is the story if one can call it a story in the three acts nothing really ever develops and the play ends as an anti climax to a deliberately fumbled up second act the beauty of presenting a tale such as this is that if any of the cast make mis takes they are covered up for the torchbearers is one big mistake the best presentation by far is by mr huxley hosse- frosse frank steeles with frank barker not far be hind in the field of amat eurism both deserve an e of excellence the part of mrs j duro pampinelli taken by doreen northover was vastly overplayed by the middle of the third act the high pitch of her voice sounded like the xvhine of monotonous tuning fork altogether considering what they had ta work with the stouffville players turned in an aboveaverage effort with a more inter esting story they would have been stars in real life as in the play a change had to be made in the cast pat dymond slated to take the part of miss florence mccrickct took ill two weeks ago and was re placed by ruth dedlow uillcd as a threeact sat irical comedy it was just that but only for the middle segment the beginning and the ending spent too much time warming up and cool ing down they did their best with what they had and thats all that could be expected of
