unite the couple in marriage january 15 1966 was al so a saturday and the cou- l pic spent it quietly at home reminiscing the past 50 years they were in clare mont not toronto and rev park was not there but what the minister had unit ed fifty years ago was still in bond mr and mrs jake taylor celebrated their gol den wedding anniversary the story of this happy couple is as interesting be fore their wedding as it is after its a story of how two young people used common sense and practical ideas to form a solid lasting and happy marriage jacob known to his many friends as jake was born in reach township north of ashburn he was one of 13 children in the taylor fam ily mabel evans was born in uxbridge township jake secured a farming job with mac forsyth in the claremont area and be cause of that position met his future wife he cant re call their first meeting place but thinks it was cither at j the church or the skating rink after a couple of years of dating mabel jake proposed and was refused it was ma bels idea that she would not get married until she was 25 she was only 23 at the time mabel said that she wanted to be sure she knew what she was doing and ev er since her childhood days was determined to stay sin gle until 25 jake meanwhile although his persuasion was friendly but firm had to wait the two years until his girls 25th birthday it was worth the wait he indicated travelled through provinces even after they were married mr and mrs tay lor took their time in find ing a suitable place to make their permanent residence the couple spent three months on a farm near claremont before jake took a job in a munitions factory in toronto they stayed in toronto for 18 months then moved to quailman saskat chewan to try western far ming that idea failed to materialize because as mrs taylor said who could live in a place where wolves came right to your front door returning to ontario mr and mrs taylor tried farm ing in three locations one in whitby township the se cond in pickering township and finally where they did settle in uxbridge town ship once settled mr and mrs taylor spent 24 years in the uxbridge location jake re tired from farming 11 years ago since then he and his wife have lived in a cozy home on the main street of claremont three daughters and two sons comprise the immed iate taylor family they are mrs alvin redshaw clare mont mr gordon taylor claremont mrs ronald carnochan oshawa mrs george smith claremont and mr ivan taylor clare mont there are sixteen grand children and five great grandchildren the turning point as in the case in the ma jority of marriages events and happenings can go both ways the depression years were the worst according to the taylors everything they had worked for just a- bout came to an abrupt end money and jobs were scarce but the family struggled through it in 1938 said jake things got better and have been improving ever since that was the turning point of our lives in 1926 i bought a brand new ford and it cost me 715 smiled jake you cant do that anymore prices have soared in re cent years its true but the taylors have never been without a car since that first ford purchased forty years ago the taylors have witnes sed many improvements in life since the early 1900s the biggest change as far as jake was concerned was the coming of the tractor and other mechanized farming equipment we thought the radio was wonderful they agreed but now tv is even better in general life has been good to the taylors they have enjoyed good times and they have taken the bad in their stride both agreed that a successful marriage is a compromise give a little and take a little we get along well to gether mrs taylor stated and her husband nodded his approval another chapter has been finished in the story of this couple a story that cant help but have a happy end ing get better milking for your cows with a w su srrko cleavers notblnc left on but the ihtnc aik for a frc iyitem
