metro toronto will be ontarios official salute to the nations centennial an outstanding private col lection of artifacts containing hundreds of items significant to the technological history of canada charles matthews and his sons charles h and roger matthews all of lang- staff the collection ranges from handmade farm implements to hearses from huge locomotives to tiny sewing machines and from fortune said mr auld it would have taken the centres experts many years to obtain item by item such a broad range of articles in fact it could probably never have been exactly duplicated the centre scheduled to open in 1067 is ontarios offic ial project commemorating 100 years of canadian nationhood construction will commence on the don valley site at the geo graphical hub of metropolitan toronto early in the new year the amount involved in the purchase of the matthews col lection was not disclosed but mr auld said it compared very favorably with an independent experts assessment of the value of the artifacts the consultant was minor w thomas jr chief curator of the new york state historical association and former chief curator at the henry ford museum dearborn michigan of the matthews collection he lold centre officials the value of such a collection to the history of canadian technology is beyond price and you are extremely fortunate in having such a group of materials to draw upon for exhibits in your new museum it includes one of north americas great collections of agricultural and allied equipment mr auld said that mr thomas and the centres own officials were deeply impress ed by the excellent judgment shown by the members of the matthews family in assembling the collection while not all articles are equally rare or valuable almost all will help the centre tell the story of this provinces and this countrys early life the way ontario worked and lived in the past and the way the past has influ enced and contributed to the way we live now and wi in the future in all the collection includes thousands of items there are many varieties of steam traction engines ploughs hearses loco motives treadmills for dogs and horses gasoil and steam trac tors wagons streetcars gas engines pea harvesters lathes hoists generators harrows buggies sulkies cultivators and drill presses the list goes on and on there is a valuable set ol tradesmens tools and equip ment including a complete blacksmiths shop a set of cob blers tools a set of hatmakers equipment a mill a large number of carpenters hand tools and a set of bulletmaking tools the collection is rich in docu- live incuts manuals and other printed material relating to the items members of the matt hews family will record their own recollections of historical details concerning the equip ment its use its origin and their acquisition of it all the items are being assessed and catalogued many are of types seldom found ex cept in major museums many were once common in ontario communities but have since faded from sight and memory most are in working condition hough almost all will require restoration before they can be put on display the smaller items are now at the centres workshop in don harris and unit one members conven ed the dinner assisted by other ucw members mr and mrs john black of balinafad were guests of mr and mrs norman reid last sat urday and visited with mrs s j english for a short time margaret patterson who is busy enough these days with all the christmas activities of a kindergarten teacher and pre parations for her boxing day wedding to brian murphy still found time to assist with the christmas candlelight service tor cgit and explorers at browns coiners united church last sunday evening mr and mrs douglas hood left by train last saturday to spend christmas in saskatche wan with jack and marian stephenson and their family gordon brown and mrs ross hord both underwent surgery last week but their families hope to have them home tor christmas mr w l clark hospital on saturday dec is following a lengthy illness mr johnson who was in hi 67th year taught at danforlh technical school for many years before his retirement he is survived by mrs johnson the
