only a few steps from his spacious office burton j newell principal of markham dist high school can pause and for a few brief moments look to the west through a large plate glass window he sees the roofiine of a red brick building that fronts- on albert street he also sees the beginning of a professional con nection that covers a period of more than 21 years it was his second home since 1944 markhams population has exceeded 0500 the old school has been replaced by an ultramodern structure the student enrollment has climbed from 150 to 830 the staff has increased from 8 to 43 everything is changed but burton j newell has not changed nor is he likely to change for at the conclusion of the june term he will leave his spacious office and the labyrinth of halls class rooms and auditoriums for a period of retirement he plans to travel a farm boy principal newell was born on a 300 acre farm in elgin county his first high school was at walkerton he then spent five years at wclland coming to markham in 1944 walkerton was a beautiful town he recal led i remember wolland tor it fine people markham has both only two of the fortythree teachers are original members of the staff of 44 miss cole and mrs ruth torrance then miss thacker mr newell recalled how gym classes were held in the old town hall now the site of the roxy theatre later students went to the old methodist church now the mr newell held the intercolle giate wrestling championship while enrolled at the university of toronto he is still the wrestl ing coach at markham it makes men out of boys he said fine as ever have high school boys and girls changed in the last 21 years i have always had a high opinion of young people and they are as fine today as australia and new zealand they will however continue to live in realtors new office heated elecrically a new electrically heated of fice on hwy no 7 near the intersection with hwy no 48 has become the headquarters for thos n shea ltd mark- hambased realtors designed as two selfcontain ed structures joined by a com mon roof the building on hwy no 7 markham was construct ed by doug meharg markham designer and builder architect was robert greig of george j lamazaki architects scarboro the electric heating system for the thos n shea building is in keeping with the conempo- rary design we chose electric cable heat ing in particular because of its prestige value mr shea said most of the heating system is hidden from view electric heat ing cables embedded in the ceil ing plaster radiate heat down wards as the sun does base board electric heaters are in stalled in some rooms such as the reception area room air drawn in through the bottom of the baseboard units passes the heating element and is dis charged into the room by natu ral convection installation costs for the 30 kilowatts of electric heating were under 2000 which com pare favourably with costs for other forms of heating annual operating costs have been esti mated at s650 for the total 2500 square feet in both structures the electrical system for light ing and heating was installed by layoie electric scarboro the thos n shea building was the electrical contractors first elec tric heating job one section of the building is occupied by thos n shea ltd which also has offices in stouff- ville uxbridge pickering agiri- court port perry and mt albert mr graham a former ontario hydro central region staff member took over from his father the late austin graham who had been secretarytreas urer for markham puc in 1959 and 1950 as well as clerktreas urer for markham village since 1914 but markham village has been growing at a rapid pace in the past five years and the posi tion of secretarytreasurer of the public utilities commission in addition to his responsible post of clerktreasurer of the municipality was too onerous for howard graham both these posts had become fulltime occu pations and the public utilities commission acted to enlarge the staff obtain new head
